Job description

Salary Range: $95,000.00 To $115,000.00 Annually

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com .

Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will be a key contributor in a team responsible for designing, building and operating mechanical systems in support of General Fusion’s LM26 project. The successful applicant will be expected to hit the ground running and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for diverse and challenging work where ideas quickly become the prototypes and machines used by General Fusion to develop practical fusion energy solutions.

Responsibilities:
  • Building, commissioning, and operating complete mechanical systems that are critical to the overall success of large integrated projects
  • Mechanicaldesign for complex engineering challenges which require out-of-the-box thinking and novel concepts, including analytical calculations and FEA as required to validate designs
  • Designing andoperating experiments to quickly test design improvement hypotheses
  • Technical analysis of test results and generation of recommendations to improve machine performance
  • Designing, building, and operating of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Working closely with a team of engineers, technicians and support staff in the lab to ensure the on-time completion of project deliverables
  • Reacting quickly to changing requirements and unforeseen issues to ensure machine uptime
  • Working with partners and suppliers in the design of key systems and components, often sourcing components that push the limits of fabrication and availability
  • Documenting design details, test plans, and experimental results
  • Contributing to the growth of the team through knowledge sharing, participating actively in project meetings, and assisting with development of right-sized processes
  • Proactively contributing to a great work environment while championing safe work practices
  • To achieve machine operable time, evening and weekend shifts may be required on occasion
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization)
  • Minimum 5 years’ post-graduate experience in practical mechanical design and design implementation
  • Strong knowledge of, and proven experience applying engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude with a strong desire to work hands-on with the components of the design, including prototyping, operating, analyzing, and iterating
  • Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments (such as high vacuum, high energy, high cleanliness), and for problems where there is little prior art or precedent to draw from
  • Experience leading and supporting the work of technicians and support staff assembling and operating equipment
  • Experience in the full life cycle of complex test beds: design, build, operation, and analysis
  • Strong understanding of materials and fabrication methods.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to deliver when work assignments / requirements are vague, informal and changing; ability to determine and communicate requirements trade-offs
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Proven ability to pivot and identify opportunities to adjust scope and deliver under aggressive project deadlines
Preferred:
  • Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building heavy industrial type equipment
  • Experience working with lithium or other reactive metals
  • Experience working within an argon glovebox or other inert environment

The typical hiring range for this position is $95,000 -$115,000 annually. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
