About Us

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com.

Position Overview

The Analytical Mechanical Engineer will analyze key elements of our liner compression process and mechanisms in support of General Fusion’s LM26 project within a cross-functional team. The successful applicant will be expected to hit the ground running and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for challenging simulation work that has a direct impact on General Fusion’s ability to develop practical fusion energy solutions. The primary focus of this role is simulation-based. However, the engineer will be required to participate in design, assembly and testing of apparatus required to validate their simulation results.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the simulation efforts to analyze the complex, multi-physics, dynamic behaviour of the LM26 machine.
  • Analyze and interpret simulation results, translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations that guide design decisions and improve system performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary experts to incorporate multi-physics insights and develop accurate, well-informed boundary conditions for simulation models.
  • Prepare high-quality documentation and present technical results to stakeholders at varying levels of technical depth.
  • Contribute to team development by sharing expertise, participating actively in design reviews, and helping refine and implement effective engineering processes.
  • Increase the team’s total simulation capabilities by developing new models and validating them through experimentation.
  • Mechanical design and operation of test apparatus, as required.
  • Correlate testing results and use them to inform future simulation work to increase fidelity.
  • Other tasks / duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization), or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical simulation.
  • Extensive experience setting up and running transient simulation studies in packages such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, and COMSOL.
  • Data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Strong knowledge of statics and dynamics, with a working knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Experience working with nonlinear material models at elevated temperatures and high strain rates.
  • Experience modelling nonlinear mechanical behavior of complex systems.
  • Strong engineering judgment with the ability to simplify complex problems and focus on key physical drivers.
  • Demonstrated experience working with design teams that have delivered effective solutions to technically challenging problems.
  • Ability to translate design concepts into effective finite element models and simulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate simulation results and learnings into design recommendations.
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Demonstrated use of configuration management for tracking simulation set-ups and results.
  • Experience working on novel problems with limited prior art, requiring innovative solutions.
  • Strong understanding of engineering materials and fabrication methods.
  • Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration, is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software, with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred.
What We Offer
  • Hybrid work environment.
  • RRSP Contribution.
  • Great company culture – social events, weekly lunch program, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.
