Role involves travel within Quebec and occasionally outside the province, with opportunities to testify as an expert witness and participate in firm growth activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is required.
  • Member of a professional order in Quebec is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.

Job description

Origin is a forensic investigation firm specializing in post-loss investigations in fire and electrical, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials, metallurgy and chemistry. Our multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists and technologists examines incidents objectively, working closely with all stakeholders to establish the facts, determine causes and set out clear, evidence-based conclusions that make informed technical, legal and insurance decisions possible.

Primary Role

The mechanical engineer’s role is to conduct technical investigations into the origin and cause of incidents involving building mechanical systems, vehicles damaged by fire, water, or mechanical failure, and the failure of electric vehicles. They also perform inspections and gather observations to determine the cause of the incident, whether involving internal combustion or electric vehicles, heavy machinery, or agricultural equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct technical investigations into the origin and cause of incidents involving vehicles damaged by fire, water, or mechanical failure;

  • Explain the process leading to findings and conclusions, communicating them both verbally and in writing;
  • Travel throughout Quebec (and occasionally outside the province) to determine the origin and cause of incidents;
  • Serve as an expert witness in court proceedings when required;
  • Participate in promotional activities and maintain the company’s professional network with ease.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline;
  • Member of a professional order in Quebec;
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in French;
  • Aptitude for and interest in technical and hands-on work;
  • Experience in the insurance, legal, or post-loss restoration sectors (an asset);
  • Availability for training in Canada and the United States, as well as for technical knowledge sharing among experts;
  • Good command of spoken and written English (an asset);
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for work-related travel, with sufficient cargo space to transport specimens and inspection equipment.

Working Conditions
  • 35 hours per week, flexible schedule;
