Job summary

Airswift is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for a major Oil and Gas client in Calgary on a 1-year contract. The role requires travel to site about once a month and involves technical decision-making, equipment specifications, and coordination across multiple disciplines.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a P.Eng designation or eligibility, plus strong knowledge of rotating and static equipment and experience in Oil Sands operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering with a P.Eng designation or eligibility for registration with APEGA.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment including pumps, seal systems, drive systems, gearboxes, couplings and pump stations.
  • Experience with static equipment such as tanks, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers.

Responsibilities

  • Make technical decisions and resolve engineering issues with minimal guidance.
  • Develop specifications for equipment to be designed, procured, or modified (rotating and bulk handling systems).
  • Prepare scopes of work and construction work packages.
  • Review contractor design documents for compliance with Albian standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate equipment and project requirements with Process, Reliability, Instrumentation, Electrical, Structural, and Piping teams.
  • Engage vendors to clarify scopes and respond to RFIs.
  • Review fabrication drawings and support QA/QC.
  • Support field execution with construction teams and contractors to resolve issues.
  • Participate in design reviews including model reviews, HAZOPs, SIL assessments and constructability reviews.
  • Assist Operations with updates to operating procedures and commissioning activities.
  • Support Reliability with troubleshooting and long-term asset improvements.

Job description

Our client, a major Oil and Gas company, is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join their team on 1-year contract in Calgary. This position requires travel to site once a month.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Make technical decisions and resolve engineering issues with minimal guidance or oversight.
  • Develop specifications for equipment to be designed, procured, or modified. Equipment may include rotating equipment, bulk material handling systems, crushing, conveying, screening, and similar systems.
  • Prepare scopes of work and construction work packages.
  • Review contractor design documents to ensure compliance with current Albian standards, engineering practices, and procedures.
  • Coordinate equipment and project requirements with other disciplines, including Process, Reliability, Instrumentation, Electrical, Structural, and Piping.
  • Work with vendors to clarify technical scopes and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Review fabrication drawings and provide support to the QA/QC team as required.
  • Work with construction teams and contractors to resolve technical issues arising during field execution.
  • Participate in design reviews as required, including model reviews, HAZOPs, SIL assessments, constructability reviews, and other risk assessments.
  • Support Operations with updates to operating procedures, equipment isolation plans, and commissioning activities as required.
  • Support the Reliability team in troubleshooting equipment issues and identifying long-term reliability improvements.
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with a P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration with APEGA.
  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, including pumps, seal systems, drive systems, gearboxes, couplings, and pump stations.
  • Working knowledge of static equipment, including tanks, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of slurry transportation systems and applicable API, ASME, and ABSA requirements.
  • Knowledge of conveyor systems and CEMA standards would be considered an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive and results-oriented approach.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct Oil Sands experience preferred, with extensive experience in rotating equipment and exposure to Ore Preparation and Extraction operations.
  • Previous experience working for an owner/operator is preferred.
  • Field engineering and construction support experience would be an asset.
  • Experience with reliability engineering, maintenance strategies, and asset management would be an asset.
