Job summary

Northern Transformer Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design liquid-filled power transformers and ensure compliance with customer specs, industry standards, and manufacturing requirements. You will work with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to deliver safe, reliable transformer solutions.

The role requires a Bachelors in mechanical engineering, 3–5 years of transformer design experience, and a P.Eng or eligibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related disciplines.
• P.Eng designation or eligibility in Canada, the U.S, or Mexico.
• Minimum of three to five years of mechanical design experience within the power transformer industry.
• Welding knowledge and quality assessment experience considered an asset.

Responsibilities

• Design power transformers from 1-200 MVA up to 230 kV.
• Review customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
• Prepare 3D models, engineering drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.
• Perform engineering calculations including structural, electrical clearances, center of gravity, seismic, vacuum, and shipping requirements.
• Uploading engineering data into the ERP system.
• Support production teams during manufacturing and assembly.
• Assist with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with suppliers to resolve technical issues and evaluate new technologies.
• Develop and improve engineering standards, design practices, and workflows.
• Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance.
• Participate in design reviews and cross-functional engineering projects.
• Promote quality, safety, and operational excellence throughout the engineering process.
