Job description

As the Mechanical Designer 2, you will be responsible for the design of distribution transformers with customization and small power transformers with a high level of customization. This position follows standards: CSA C227.3; C227.4; C227.5; C2.1; C88.

This role calls for a designer who can blend technical precision with practical problem-solving—someone who can translate complex customer requirements into accurate transformer designs, calculations, drawings, and production-ready documentation. Strong competencies

include mechanical design judgment, attention to detail, standards compliance, cross-functional collaboration, and adaptability under pressure, especially when supporting Sales, Electrical Engineering, Purchasing, QA, and production teams. The ideal person is equal parts engineer, detective, communicator, and craftsperson: curious enough to catch what others miss, disciplined enough to follow CSA/ISO requirements, and collaborative enough to keep custom projects moving smoothly from concept to as-built documentation.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Design distribution transformers (customized) and small power transformers (highly customized) in accordance with applicable CSA standards.
  • Create Initial Customer Documentation (ICD), including outline/legend/nameplate drawings and other customer-requested documents (e.g., decals).
  • Perform required design calculations (e.g., tank weights, pressure, center of gravity; and other mechanical integrity checks).
  • Produce detailed mechanical designs (internal clamp/unit assembly and external tank assembly) and release outputs to Sales/Purchasing/QA; create nameplates for production.
  • Support production through schedule-based design clarifications, documentation updates/revisions, NCR involvement, and final as-built documentation.
WHAT IT TAKES
  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering; Mechanical is an asset.
  • Requires an engineering degree with design component.
  • P. Eng is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mechanical designing.
  • Demonstrated experience with 3D parametric solid modeling (i.e., CREO, WindChill, 3D AutoCAD).
  • Knowledge of databases (i.e. SAP, Project Lifecycle Management DB’, Microsoft Suite).
  • Demonstrated attention to detail is required.
  • Skilled/technical knowledge & customer service.
  • Previous transformer design related experience is an asset.
  • Ability to work at sustained pace and produce quality work.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
