Job summary

New Flyer is seeking a Field Service Technician to service and repair our heavy‑duty transit buses across Canada and the US. You will diagnose diesel, electric, and hydrogen systems and lead HVAC service with a focus on safety and reliability.

The role requires extensive hands‑on experience, strong diagnostic skills, and the ability to mentor junior mechanics. Travel up to 50% and target a high standard of customer service are essential to success.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years experience in a similar role, preferably with heavy‑duty transit buses or trucks.
  • Diesel engines, driveline components, electrical systems, and EV maintenance expertise.
  • Proficient with shop tools, diagnostic devices, and repair equipment.
  • Certified Truck & Coach Technician (310T) or in progress; Red Seal preferred.
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills are essential.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team with good organizational skills.
  • Willing to travel up to 50% of the time; passport required.
  • Strict adherence to safety practices and PPE usage.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair advanced systems, including diesel, electric, and hydrogen fuel cell engines, HVAC systems, driveline components, and electrical systems.
  • Lead the servicing and repair of complex HVAC systems to ensure optimal passenger comfort and system efficiency.
  • Conduct in‑depth troubleshooting of high‑voltage electrical systems and drivetrains for electric buses using advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Oversee final inspection for fleet vehicles to certify safety and performance prior to release.
  • Mentor junior mechanics (Mechanic III and II) to uphold high workmanship standards.
  • Stay updated with industry advancements and integrate new technologies into maintenance practices.

Position Summary

Are you a skilled mechanic with experience in both traditional and cutting‑edge technologies, or an aspiring apprentice eager to grow? Join New Flyer as a Field Service Technician, where you'll play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing our diverse fleet. You will ensure that our buses, from diesel engines to electric drivetrains, operate at their peak performance. In addition to your mechanical expertise, you'll provide essential on‑site support across various locations in Canada and the US. This dynamic, customer‑facing position involves troubleshooting, repairing equipment, completing retrofits, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction through professional service. You will work closely with teams from both MCI and New Flyer, enhancing operational efficiency and fostering strong customer relations.

What You'll Do
  • Diagnose and repair advanced systems, including diesel, electric, and hydrogen fuel cell engines, HVAC systems, driveline components, and electrical systems.
  • Lead the servicing and repair of complex HVAC systems to ensure optimal passenger comfort and system efficiency.
  • Conduct in‑depth troubleshooting and repairs of high‑voltage electrical systems and drivetrains for electric buses, using advanced diagnostic tools.

What You Need to Be Successful
  • Minimum of five years experience in a similar position, preferably with heavy‑duty transit buses or trucks.
  • Technical expertise with diesel engines, driveline components, electrical systems, and electric vehicle maintenance; familiarity with diagnostic devices such as DDEC, ATEC readers, Cummins Insite, DDDL, Allison DOC, Wabco Toolbox, Bendix ACOM.
  • Proficiency with shop tools, diagnostic devices, and repair equipment.
  • Certification: Certified Truck & Coach Technician (310T) or pursuit of certification; Red Seal preferred. Additional certifications related to electric vehicles or advanced diagnostics are beneficial.
  • High level of professionalism and strong customer‑service skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain detailed reports and logs.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time; a valid passport required.
  • Strong understanding of safety practices and effective use of personal protective equipment.
