Job Description Summary

As a Marine Systems Support Engineer, you will serve as a dual‑role technical authority supporting GE Vernova systems aboard Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) vessels. You will act as the primary technical bridge between field operations and engineering design. This role is split between the "deck plate" (hands‑on troubleshooting/commissioning at the shipyard/base) and the "drawing board" (managing system obsolescence, performing design modifications, and developing engineering solutions). You will be a critical partner to the RCN technical authorities, ensuring long‑term fleet readiness.

Location: Victoria/Esquimalt, BC

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Field Support & Troubleshooting:Provide on‑site technical guidance for complex maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of propulsion and power systems during sea trials, dockside repairs, and refits.
  • Voice of the Customer (Engineering Partner):Act as the critical voice of the customer by partnering directly with our internal design engineering teams. You will provide real‑world insights, performance data, and operational feedback to influence future product designs and serviceability.
  • Obsolescence Management:Monitor the lifecycle of system components. Proactively identify End‑of‑Life (EOL) hardware and software; develop and implement mitigation plans to maintain system integrity.
  • Engineering Design & Integration:Draft and manage Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs). Utilize CAD software to create design modifications and review technical specifications for system‑level integration.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA):Conduct deep‑div investigations into persistent technical failures. Translate field findings into formal, evidence‑based engineering design improvements.
  • Configuration Management:Ensure all shipboard systems are documented to the latest "as‑maintained" standard, ensuring that design modifications meet DND safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Preventative Maintenance:Execute planned maintenance routines and provide technical guidance to naval technical staff on equipment lifecycle management.
  • Documentation:Maintain accurate service records, technical reports, and maintenance logs in accordance with both GE Vernova and Department of National Defence (DND ) standards.
  • Safety & Compliance:Adhere strictly to maritime safety protocols, naval security regulations, and occupational health and safety (OHS) standards while working in confined shipboard environments.
  • Stakeholder Liaison:Provide technical subject matter expertise to RCN engineers, project managers, and shipyard contractors regarding system performance and upgrade paths.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Education:Degree or Diploma in Marine, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent military training/certification).
  • Experience:Minimum 5 years of experience in field service, ideally involving marine propulsion or industrial power generation systems, demonstrating a blend of field‑service and design/engineering experience.
  • Naval Expertise:Minimum 5 years demonstrated understanding of naval vessel operations or previous experience working within a military/government maritime environment.
  • Technical Skills:Minimum 5 years’ experience with PLC programming, control systems, and high‑voltage power distribution. Strong working knowledge of maritime technical standards and Configuration Management principles.
