Job summary

Nutrien in Saskatoon, SK, is seeking a Manager, Payroll to lead in-country payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery while partnering with Finance and HR.

The role requires PCP certification, CPM preferred, extensive Canada payroll knowledge, and experience with large ERP payroll systems; you will drive improvements and governance across the payroll function.

Qualifications

  • Must have payroll certification (PCP/CPM preferred).
  • Proven ability to lead geographically dispersed teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Canada payroll regulations and tax guidelines.
  • Experience with SOX/internal controls and payroll audits.
  • Proficient in ERP payroll systems and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a diverse payroll team across locations.
  • Oversee compliant payroll processing and year-end activities.
  • Ensure accuracy of payroll tax remittances and disclosures.
  • Partner with Finance for GL reconciliations and reporting.
  • Maintain payroll documentation and governance controls.
  • Drive process improvements and standardization.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and external providers.
  • Support organizational changes, acquisitions, and system implementations.
  • Monitor KPIs on accuracy, timeliness, and service levels.
  • Champion employee experience and data privacy in payroll.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead and develop a diverse team of in-country payroll professionals, fostering accountability, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Oversee efficient and compliant payroll operations while maintaining comprehensive process documentation, protecting sensitive personal information, and ensuring strong internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, income tax regulations, CPP, EI, provincial health taxes, workers' compensation requirements, privacy legislation, and year-end reporting obligations.
  • Monitor and report key payroll performance indicators including payroll accuracy, timeliness, service levels, compliance metrics, and employee satisfaction.
  • Lead year-end payroll activities, including statutory filings and compliance validation.
  • Approve payroll processing, tax remittances, and related activities, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll delivery.
  • Partner with Finance to ensure payroll accounting accuracy, general ledger and balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, financial reporting requirements, and audit readiness.
  • Develop and execute payroll operational strategy aligned with business objectives.
  • Establish and monitor payroll governance, controls, and risk mitigation frameworks.
  • Lead relationships with payroll vendors, tax service providers, and external stakeholders.
  • Lead payroll-related activities for organizational changes, acquisitions, system implementations, and business transformation initiatives.
  • Build strong partnerships with employees, HR, Finance, and business leaders while championing a customer-focused payroll service model that enhances employee experience and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Drive continuous improvement and global alignment initiatives through standardized processes, service level agreements, and governance practices that enhance efficiency, reduce risk, improve service delivery, and support evolving business needs.
What You'll Bring:
  • Significant payroll experience with a current payroll certification. PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) required; CPM (Certified Payroll Manager) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading geographically dispersed teams through organizational change and process transformation.
  • Strong knowledge of Canada payroll, payroll tax, and wage and legislative requirements. US knowledge would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with payroll audits, SOX/internal controls, and compliance governance.
  • Strong experience with large ERP payroll systems and reporting platforms.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership in coaching, developing, and retaining high-performing payroll teams.
  • Proven ability to design, standardize, and optimize processes in complex, fast-paced, shared-services or global environments.
  • Manage team performance, talent development, succession planning, and employee engagement to build a high-performing payroll organization.
  • Strong project, time, and stakeholder management capabilities with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • High level of professional integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.
  • Self-directed leader with the ability to work independently while driving alignment across functions.
