Job summary

Durham Region in Pickering, Ontario, is seeking a knowledgeable Food Services Manager to lead standards for food safety, oversee budgets, and manage resources.

You will supervise the Therapeutic Dietitian, food service supervisors, and clerical staff, ensuring compliance with regulations and delivering high-quality nutrition and service. Strong leadership and collaboration with care teams are essential.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Food and Nutrition Management
  • Current CSNM/OSNM or College of Dietitians of Ontario membership
  • Years of leadership experience, preferably in long-term care
  • Knowledge of FLTC Act, Ontario Food Premises Regulation and related legislation
  • Strong nutrition knowledge for long-term care and safe food handling
  • Familiarity with WHMIS, OHSA and occupational health and safety

Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement food safety and quality standards and ensure legislative compliance
  • Prepare and monitor department budget annually
  • Manage resources including food, supplies, equipment and facilities
  • Directly supervise Therapeutic Dietitian, Food Services Supervisors and clerical staff
  • Oversee recruitment, performance management and staff training
  • Monitor risk management programs to reduce foodborne illness and safety risks
  • Develop feedback tools and audit processes to improve service and processes
  • Promote positive public relations and respond to inquiries
  • Contribute to operational planning and department plans aligned with care philosophy
  • Ensure health and safety policy compliance

Location

This position is located at Seaton Village in Pickering, Ontario.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and implement standards for food safety and quality and ensure compliance with legislative requirements
  • Prepare, manage, and monitor the annual budget for the department
  • Manage material resources such as food, supplies, equipment, and facilities as well as research, plan and implement technological tools used for food service operations to ensure quality, accuracy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Directly oversee the Therapeutic Dietitian, Food Services Supervisors, clerical staff and indirectly supervise a team of Food Service Aides and Chefs
  • Ensure effective and efficient management of human resources by leading and participating in recruitment, performance management and training activities, as well as resolving conflicts and grievances
  • Administer and monitor the department's risk management programs to reduce the level of risk associated with food borne illness, poor nutrition intake and health and safety issues
  • Develop and implement various feedback and auditing tools to solicit input from customers and ensure satisfaction with the services provided, continuously looking for ways to improve service and processes
  • Promote good public relations with internal and external customers and respond to inquiries and complaints in a timely manner
  • Participate in the Home's operational planning process and develop, implement and evaluate departmental operational plans for Food Services to ensure compliance with legislated requirements and the Home's philosophy of care
  • Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and safety legislation and all corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved diploma or degree program in Food and Nutrition Management
  • Current membership in good standing with the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM), Ontario Society of Nutrition Management or College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • A minimum of several years of leadership experience, ideally in a long-term care setting
  • Culinary experience or hospitality management experience is an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of the Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021 and regulations and as amended, as well as the Ontario Food Premises Regulation under the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nutrition for long term care, safe food preparation, storage and delivery principles and related equipment
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS), Employment Standards Act and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement tools and the Accreditation Canada process
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills, along with the ability to coach, mentor and develop others
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound project/time management skills
  • Highly developed analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, electronic health care records (i.e: Point Click Care), and food service software systems such as Synergy and Mealsuite
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate a respectful and bias-aware team culture.
Management & Exempt Salary Grade 5
  • Salary: $99,893 to $124,866 per annum
Conditions of Employment

All applicants are expected to comply with the Region of Durham's Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct Policies throughout the recruitment process. The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within six (6) months from date of hire. Additionally, tuberculosis screening will be required in accordance with the FLTCAct (O.Reg. 246/22). Proof of education, qualifications and any other job bona fide requirements will also be collected. Finally, compliance with the Mask Fit Testing Program is required and will be coordinated as part of the orientation process.
