Family Service Toronto is seeking a Finance leader to manage day-to-day accounting, reporting, budgeting and governance in a complex multi-program nonprofit. You will oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll, general ledger, monthly closes, and ensure ASNPO compliance with funders.

The Manager, Finance will lead a growing team, strengthen internal controls, support audits, and provide strategic financial analysis to drive sustainable program delivery and community impact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, commerce, or business administration.
  • CPA designation in good standing.
  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
  • Experience in the non-profit or public sector preferred.
  • Experience supervising finance staff.
  • Experience managing multi-program budgets and government-funded contracts.
  • Auditing experience and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

The Opportunity!
Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Manager, Finance plays a vital role on FST's leadership team. This position is responsible for the day-to-day financial management and accounting operations of the organization, ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and operational excellence. The Manager, Finance oversees accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, audits, and government funding compliance while supporting strategic decision-making across the organization.
The Manger, Finance leads the finance team, strengthens financial processes and internal controls, and works collaboratively with leaders to support effective stewardship of public resources in a complex, multi-program environment.

Responsibilities

Financial Operations

  • Oversee the organization's day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll reconciliations, general ledger, fixed assets, and month-end close.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).
  • Maintain the integrity of financial records and accounting systems.
  • Monitor cash flow and banking activities to ensure organizational financial stability.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial transactions for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Produce variance analyses and financial forecasts for senior leadership.
  • Develop financial reports for program managers and senior leadership to support informed decision-making.
  • Prepare reports required by funders, government agencies, and regulatory bodies.
  • Present financial information in a clear, meaningful, and accessible manner.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Coordinate the annual budgeting process across all departments.
  • Support leaders in developing operating and program budgets.
  • Monitor organizational performance against budget and identify emerging financial risks.
  • Prepare regular financial forecasts and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
  • Support long-term financial planning and sustainability initiatives.

Government Funding & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements and reporting requirements.
  • Monitor expenditures against funding allocations and restrictions.
  • Prepare financial schedules and supporting documentation for government funders.
  • Support funding reconciliations and year-end settlements.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable legislation, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements affecting the non-profit sector.

Audit and Internal Controls

  • Coordinate the annual external audit and ensure required working papers are completed.
  • Liaise with external auditors and respond to audit inquiries.
  • Support the development and implementation of internal financial controls and policies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, efficiency, and risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational financial policies and procurement procedures.

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Lead initiatives to improve financial systems and reporting capabilities.
  • Optimize the use of accounting and ERP systems.
  • Participate in organizational projects involving finance, technology, and operational improvements.
  • Support implementation of new financial processes and best practices.

Collaboration

  • Build strong relationships with managers and Directors across the organization.
  • Provide financial guidance to operational leaders.
  • Partner with Human Resources regarding payroll, benefits, and staffing budgets.
  • Support organizational planning and strategic initiatives through financial analysis.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Create a healthy, engaged workplace that fosters trust, belonging, risk-taking and innovation by engaging and supporting each other, by valuing open and transparent communication, collaboration and different perspectives and opinions.
  • Foster a culture of learning, evaluation, outcome measurement, and innovation, within the department and across the organization, which contributes to knowledge creation, learning, employee engagement and improvement within FST and the community.
  • Ensure that management team carry out their responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, the collective agreement and legislation including recruitment, orientation, coaching and supervision of direct reports, performance appraisals, recognition, and training and development.
  • Ensure a safe and well-maintained workplace, assess risks, and take all reasonable precautions to protect staff from illness and/or injury.

Personnel Management:

  • Ensures the most effective involvement of staff and the best use of resources in the delivery of each team’s services in accordance with the programs’ guidelines.
  • In consultation with Human Resources, recruits, hires, trains, recognizes, appraises, disciplines and recommends termination of staff.
  • Provide guidance, coaching and mentorship to foster a high-performing team environment that empowers team members, and supports and encourages creative problem solving and decision-making.
  • Resolve conflicts and provide feedback in a direct, constructive manner using principles of cultural competence.
  • Conduct regular supervision and performance appraisals.
  • Works with staff to identify training and development needs to improve performance where necessary.
  • Monitors staffing and funding resources, ensuring service vacancies are filled in a timely fashion.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Articulate commitment to diversity, challenge the status quo, hold others accountable, and makes diversity, equity, and inclusion a priority.
  • Act as a change agent for integration of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), anti-oppression and social justice principles within FST policies, practices, culture, programs, and activities, and within the sector, and community.
  • Accountable for development of and progress toward organizational EDI goals.
  • Ensure a strong EDI learning culture; ensure team commitment to the application of EDI best practices in their work.
  • Add EDI considerations to meeting agendas so that programming and service delivery decisions are aligned with EDI philosophy and standards.
  • Ensure people with lived expertise are respectfully and critically engaged in FST operations.
  • Encourage behaviours that reflect a trauma informed approach.
  • Evaluate EDI program effectiveness and measure program impact.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Commerce, or Business Administration or a related field.
  • CPA designation required and is a current member in good standing.
  • Five to seven years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
  • Experience in the non-profit, or broader public sector preferred.
  • Experience in supervising finance staff.
  • Experience managing multi-program budgets and government-funded contracts.
  • Experience supporting annual audits.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365 Business Central would be preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI would be preferred.
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and payroll systems (ADP).
  • Advanced planning, analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and mediation skills.
  • Strong leadership skills; able to work collaboratively and strategically with colleagues, tenants, business partners and vendors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of social justice, cultural competency and equity and inclusion.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference check and Vulnerable Sector Check completion
