Job summary

City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Manager, Engineering – Electric Generation to lead an experienced team responsible for the performance, reliability, and long‑term evolution of the City's generation assets. You will coach, mentor, and develop engineers while guiding capital planning and asset lifecycle strategies.

You will oversee gas turbines, steam systems, and balance‑of‑plant equipment, partner with Operations and Maintenance, and help shape modernization and outage planning with senior

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • 7+ years in power generation including gas turbine experience.
  • 5+ years supervisory/management experience.
  • PE Registration with APEGA in good standing; PMP is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Electric Generation Engineering team through coaching and guidance.
  • Provide engineering oversight for gas turbines, steam systems, generators and balance‑of‑plant equipment.
  • Support outage planning, troubleshooting, and post‑outage analysis.
  • Drive improvements in reliability, availability and performance of the plant.
  • Lead input into capital planning, lifecycle strategies and major upgrades.
  • Own the Plant Management of Change process and coordinate with Leadership on budgeting.

What you'll do

As Manager, Engineering, Electric Generation, you will lead the engineering team responsible for the performance, reliability, and long‑term evolution of the City's generation assets.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and developing the Electric Generation Engineering team through coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance.
  • Providing engineering oversight for gas turbines, steam systems, generators, and balance‑of‑plant equipment, including LM6000 units.
  • Supporting outage planning, execution, troubleshooting, and post‑outage engineering analysis.
  • Driving improvements in plant reliability, availability, performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Leading engineering input into capital planning, lifecycle strategies, and major plant upgrades.
  • Evaluating legacy and modern assets and advising how they fit within the City's long‑term generation strategy.
  • Owning and leading the Plant Management of Change process.
  • Partnering with Operations, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and senior leadership on budgeting, modernization, and long‑term planning.
What you bring

You are a technically credible engineering leader who enjoys being close to the equipment, the people, and the decisions.

You bring strong experience in power generation, including gas turbines, along with a practical and analytical approach to problem‑solving and asset decision‑making. You are comfortable providing technical guidance, developing employees, collaborating across departments, and communicating recommendations to senior leaders.

Qualifications include:

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; a master's degree is considered an asset.
  • 7+ years of directly related experience in power generation, including gas turbine experience.
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA, in good standing.
  • PMP designation is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence.
