Job summary

City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Manager, Engineering, Electric Generation to lead the engineering team responsible for the performance, reliability, and long‑term evolution of the City's generation assets.

You will coach and mentor staff, oversee gas turbines, steam systems, generators, and balance‑of‑plant equipment, and collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Supply Chain and leadership on budgeting and modernization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (PE registration may be required).
  • 7+ years of directly related experience in power generation, including gas turbine experience.
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • P. Eng. with APEGA in good standing; PMP designation is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Electric Generation Engineering team through coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance.
  • Provide engineering oversight for gas turbines, steam systems, generators, and balance‑of‑plant equipment, including LM6000 units.
  • Support outage planning, execution, troubleshooting, and post‑outage engineering analysis.
  • Drive improvements in plant reliability, availability, performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead engineering input into capital planning, lifecycle strategies, and major plant upgrades.
  • Evaluate legacy and modern assets and advise on fit within the City’s long‑term generation strategy.
  • Own and lead the Plant Management of Change process.
  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and senior leadership on budgeting, modernization, and long‑term planning.

What You Bring

You are a technically credible engineering leader who enjoys being close to the equipment, the people, and the decisions.

You bring strong experience in power generation, including gas turbines, along with a practical and analytical approach to problem‑solving and asset decision‑making. You are comfortable providing technical guidance, developing employees, collaborating across departments, and communicating recommendations to senior leaders.

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; a master's degree is considered an asset.
  • 7+ years of directly related experience in power generation, including gas turbine experience.
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA, in good standing.
  • PMP designation is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence.
