Responsibilities

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager - Engineering based in Canada.

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a talented team of software engineers responsible for building and maintaining critical Internet infrastructure and digital platforms. In this hands-on leadership role, you will combine technical expertise, people management, and delivery ownership to develop reliable, scalable, and secure backend services. You will guide architectural decisions, oversee engineering execution, and contribute directly to technical problem-solving and production systems. Working closely with Product, Operations, QA, Design, and engineering leadership, you will translate business priorities into effective technical solutions. You will also drive improvements in development practices, system performance, and engineering productivity through modern technologies and AI-assisted tools. Accountabilities

• People Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers through recruitment, hiring, regular one-on-ones, constructive feedback, career development, and performance management.

• Engineering Execution: Own day-to-day delivery, including planning, prioritization, technical implementation, release coordination, and removing project blockers.

• Technical Leadership: Remain hands-on through architecture discussions, code reviews, troubleshooting, technical decision-making, and contributions to production code.

• Architecture & System Design: Lead technical design decisions for services and applications while collaborating with engineering leadership on broader platform architecture and long-term strategy.

• Requirements & Prioritization: Translate business and product requirements into actionable technical plans, balancing roadmap objectives, technical debt, and operational needs.

• Platform Development: Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of backend services, applications, RESTful APIs, database schemas, and integrations.

• Cross-Functional Delivery: Coordinate complex initiatives across multiple applications and services, managing dependencies with Product, Operations, QA, Design, and other engineering teams.

• Reliability & Performance: Drive continuous improvements in system availability, performance, security, observability, and maintainability.

• Incident Management: Lead technical incident response, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and follow-up initiatives to strengthen system reliability.

• Engineering Best Practices: Establish and improve development standards covering automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, code quality, version control, and release management.

• AI-assisted Development: Promote the responsible adoption of AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and development workflows.

• Performance Monitoring: Define clear engineering goals and track delivery, quality, and reliability metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.

• Technical Ownership: Develop independent technical ownership within the team through effective delegation, coaching, and hands-on guidance.

• Stakeholder Communication: Clearly communicate engineering progress, technical decisions, risks, and operational priorities to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

The ideal candidate combines substantial software engineering experience with proven people management capabilities and strong technical judgment. You should demonstrate:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• At least 6 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong background in backend development, system design, and production applications.

• At least 2 years of engineering management experience, including direct people management, mentoring, and performance management.

• Strong programming experience with Python, Go, or comparable backend languages.

• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI or Gin.

• Solid experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including database schema design and query optimization.

• Demonstrated ability to design, build, and operate highly available, reliable, and scalable services.

• Strong technical judgment and hands-on development experience, including production code contributions and complex technical problem-solving.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions, trade-offs, and risks to diverse stakeholders.

• Experience managing engineering delivery, technical priorities, and cross-functional dependencies.

• Familiarity with Agile methodologies, including Scrum, Kanban, or similar development frameworks.

• Practical experience using AI-assisted software development tools, with appropriate validation and security practices.

• Experience with automated testing, Continuous Integration, Git, and modern software development workflows.

• Experience supporting production systems, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and leading incident response.

• Proven ability to lead and collaborate with geographically distributed engineering teams.

Nice to Have:

• Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other message brokers.

• Knowledge of DNS, EPP, RDAP, or other Internet protocols.

• Experience modernizing legacy applications, systems, and services.

• Background developing and maintaining e-commerce or other transaction-oriented platforms.

• Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms and container technologies such as Docker, Docker Swarm, or Kubernetes.

• Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JWT, OpenAPI, and API security best practices.
