About the job:

BC Hydro is an energy conservation leader among North American utilities, implementing a large portfolio of programs and initiatives that encourage customers to conserve electricity and use it more efficiently. BC Hydro is also initiating new programs to encourage customers to reduce their use of electricity during system peak periods and to substitute the efficient use of clean electricity for fuels that emit greenhouse gases.

The Energy Management & Innovation (EM&I) business unit supports BC Hydro’s energy management, capacity, and electrification goals in a cohesive, integrated way, while enabling our teams to serve the future needs of our residential, commercial, and industrial customers. One of our important goals is to design and manage solutions that foster the adoption of smart energy choices for both customers and the BC Hydro grid.

The Engineering department in the EM&I business unit is responsible for the engineering support for program offer development, codes and standards, and research and technology demonstrations. The engineering team is also responsible for the technical due diligence review of customer energy management projects in BC Hydro’s service territory that participate in BC Hydro programs, conservation rates, government codes and standards. The department also supports the research and demonstrations of emerging technologies for customer products and how BC Hydro can integrate these products within program offers. The department is made up of one manager, three sector team leads and engineers with expertise in electrical, industrial, mechatronics, and mechanical engineering. The department also utilizes consultants and contractors.

The Engineering department is responsible for:

(1)Technical due diligence review of the anticipated electrical energy savings (kWh) resulting from BC Hydro’s Energy Efficiency (EE), electrification (LCE), capacity focused (CFDSM), and Transmission Rates projects at Commercial and Industrial (C&I) customer facilities.

(2)Participation and the development of codes and standards applicable to the energy efficiency and capacity initiatives in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

(3) Research and technical support for emerging technology demonstrations, customer and consultant training.

What you’ll do:

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Engineering and EM&V, the Manager of Engineering has accountability for the following duties:

* Developing and periodically updating a strategy for the delivery of Engineering services that meets the changing needs of BC Hydro.

* Designing and implementing work processes that support efficient and effective delivery of Engineering services.

* Provide technical expertise and support for the design and implementation of energy management programs and initiatives.

* Designing and implementing work processes and controls to manage risks and ensure the integrity of the reporting of project energy impacts from energy management programs and initiatives.

* Leading and overseeing relations with internal clients and broader stakeholders.

* Ensuring the department performs Engineering activities to the BC Hydro Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and applicable EGBC bylaws in addition to following the Energy Management & Innovation - Engineering Practice guidelines.

* EGBC Responsible Registrant for Customer and Corporate Affairs including management and implementation of the requirements for the BC Hydro PPMP and oversight of Engineering related practices.

* Providing technical leadership in the engineering, procurement, implementation and management of data analysis and data collection activities.

* Lead team in conducting strategic research on emerging technologies and participating in speaking events with industry partners and training events for customers, consultants, and energy managers.

* Overseeing project management and quality assurance/oversight of the department’s work. This may include review and engineering authentication for required work.

* Meeting with internal and customer project stakeholders to review the results of engineering review activities and research reports. This may include formal presentations outlining the related engineering activities that were performed and the energy and demand impacts determined.

* Providing regular updates on key performance indicators and metrics to Sr. Management. Providing presentations, briefing notes and reports on key subject matter to the leadership team and the executive.

* Performing reviews of customer energy impacting projects participating in specific Transmission Tariff rates.

* Management of overall staff safety practices including customer site inspections, safety incident management, and PPE for staff.

* Maintain and develop training and procedures for the mitigation of safety hazards in the field for the department’s field measurement work.

* Supervising the work and professional development of department staff.

* Managing staffing requirements and workload for the department including staff, consultants and contractors.

* Providing energy management engineering expertise to internal BC Hydro stakeholders and BC Hydro customers.

* Managing a large annual budget comprised of internal resource labour, contractors, and other consulting works.

What you bring:

* Engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electro-mechanical or other related discipline.

* 10+ yrs. experience in a relevant engineering field with demonstrated leadership experience.

* Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia with EGBC.

* Possesses, or is eligible to register for, the Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

* 10+ years of experience in energy management engineering, specifically with exposure to electric utility EE DSM, LCE and CFDSM programs environment.

* Demonstrated skills in work planning, work process design and/or project management.

* Well-developed and demonstrated working knowledge of typical end uses such as lighting fixtures, lighting control systems as well as mechanical systems such as fans, pumps, compressors, HVAC, boilers and refrigeration for the Commercial and Institutional facilities environment is an asset.

* Energy engineering experience including the implementation of energy related projects in commercial sectors such as institutional, health care, government and or industrial sectors such as mining, oil and gas and pulp and paper. Other sectors such as wood products, manufacturing, commercial space, district energy, transportation will also be an asset.

* Strong written and oral communication skills are required.

* Demonstrated proficiency in giving presentations. Stakeholders may range from non-technical to technical subject matter experts.

* Experience leading teams of professionals and strong interpersonal skills.

The following qualifications would also be an asset:

* Master’s degree in business or other related discipline would be considered an asset.

* Designation as a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP) would be an asset.

* Familiarity with codes and standards development ie. CSA and UL. In addition to ISO standards like ISO 50001, ISO 50002, and ISO 16000. Other provincial and federal standards and guidelines for GHG reporting.

* Familiarity with low-carbon electrification strategies, GHG reporting, and verification is an asset.

* Management experience in a utility environment, including managing union and non-union employees, consultants and budget.

* Experience with energy/utilities, energy management and related projects would be an asset.
