Characteristic Job Duties
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:
- Repairs and if required, install plumbing fixtures such as taps, sinks, and toilets.
- Where possible, performs mechanical and electrical repairs to equipment such as kitchen equipment, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, light fixtures, etc.
- Where applicable, performs plastering, painting, and decorating for repairs.
- Ensures that maintenance materials are purchased or received, stored, and redistributed as necessary.
- Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, recommends repairs and purchases as required.
- Monitors and adjusts heating, temperature controls for facility and water, ventilating and air conditioning systems by operating the facility’s control systems.
- Ensures the maintenance of the building exterior and grounds as appropriate.
- Maintains a safe living and working environment through compliance with policies and procedures, rules and regulations governing facility safety and safety in the workplace.
- Contact various trades’ people for various contracts/quotes as required.
- Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments, using hand tools.
- Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions.
- Perform routine maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
- Plan and lay out repair work using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals.
- Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassemble equipment.
- Record maintenance and repair work performed using applicable forms.
- Prioritize work load using maintenance request forms.
- Reproduce keys using key cutting machine.
Required Skills And Abilities
- Valid Driver’s License in Good Standing
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Demonstrated skills and experience of the following areas: electrical, mechanical, and general building maintenance.
- Physical stamina and flexibility, and ability to work in adverse conditions.
- A strong sense of initiative and responsibility in working alone.
- Problem solving and decision making skills.
- Desire to work among a diverse group of people.
- Supervises volunteers and community service orders
- Monitors the inventory of Booth Centre tools and equipment and ensures that it is kept current; ensures that the annual inventory check is conducted
- Performs other duties as assigned
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Minimum Education Level Attained
The successful job applicant will have Grade 12 or equivalent or three years’ experience in a related environment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Various practical and related trade experiences would be an asset.

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable at the discretion of the Executive Director.
Minimum Prior Related Experience
The incumbent must have three years’ experience in a related environment or be willing to be trained on site by supervisor in general repairs in Carpentry, Drywall, Electrical & Plumbing etc. as well as building systems, fire safety, water treatment, electrical systems, supervisory, statistics and reading legislation experience.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required
The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of keyboarding, walking as well as general care, repairs and maintenance for the facility, building systems, security, monitoring systems and grounds in all weather conditions.
Concentration Required
The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when reading equipment manuals (for safe operating instructions), using PPE and use of fine motor skills.
Responsibility For Financial Resources
The incumbent may have limited responsibility to manage financial resources.
Responsibility For Human Resources
The incumbent will have limited HR responsibility but may be required to oversee volunteers and individuals under community service orders.
Work Environment
The incumbent’s Work Environment is typically inside and/or outside of the Winnipeg Booth Centre Campus or Various Officer Quarters properties in Winnipeg.
- Working with residents who are homeless, seniors, mentally challenged, have needs that are physical, emotional and psychiatric;
- Working in emotional and high level of stress related situations
- Disagreeable conditions: pesticide residue, machinery noise, varying temperatures
- Will be required to travel locally for pick up and drop off of supplies, donations or other similar job travel duties.
Exposure To Hazards
The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:
- Potential of physical, verbal and mental abuse within workplace (by participants)
- Potential of exposure to infectious diseases
- Potential of exposure to toxic chemicals
- Potential of exposure to bodily fluids (human waste)
- Potential of sharp and moving objects
- Potential of pressures of timelines
- Potential of objects falling off high shelving
- Potential of slippery or wet surfaces
- Potential of exposure to odors
- Potential of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
Precautionary Measures

- Use of protective masks (as needed)
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $18.74 to $18.74 with a maximum of $18.74.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
