Job summary

The Salvation Army in Toronto, Ontario is seeking a Maintenance Worker to ensure safety and comfort for clients and staff by performing general maintenance and repairs across facilities at 160 Jarvis and Alice M Walter House. You will follow safe procedures, maintain logs, and support health and safety inspections.

This role requires Grade 12 and at least two years of related experience with cleaning procedures, WHMIS and First Aid/CPR training preferred.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 plus two years of related experience with cleaning experience and familiarity with cleaning procedures and chemicals.
  • Experience in preventative maintenance programs and building maintenance.
  • Various trade experiences would be an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively and maintain respectful relationships.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work and be computer literate.
  • WHMIS training and First Aid/CPR is required or willing to complete.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training would be an asset.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check will be required upon hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in minor repairs including electrical, plumbing, and painting throughout the building.
  • Recommend maintenance and repairs to management.
  • Conduct checks and minor troubleshooting of building systems such as HVAC and alarms.
  • Maintain task logs during shifts and monitor external property upkeep.
  • Assist in health and safety inspections and report safety concerns.
  • Support the Assistant Property Manager during inspections and ensure building security.

Position Purpose summary

Reporting to the Assistant Property Manager, the Maintenance Worker is responsible to address the safety and comfort of our clients and staff by carrying out general maintenance and repair tasks to furnishings, fixtures and equipment within the 160 Jarvis and Alice M Walter House. The Maintenance Worker will always work safely, within their skill set, and according to regulation and policy for facility maintenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
  • Check on all building systems, maintain regular checklist reports, and report potential problem situations to the Assistant Property Manager and the Property Manager
  • Maintain equipment logs
  • Ensure that safe work procedures and SDS documents are followed when using chemicals as part of duties
  • May assist in performing minor equipment and maintenance repairs, such as electrical (change burnt out bulbs), plumbing (repairs plumbing fixtures such as taps, sinks, toilets), painting (touch-up and decorating repairs) throughout the building, including client units in the treatment and transitional housing program
  • Recommends maintenance and equipment repairs to the Assistant Property Manager and the Property Manager
  • Conducts checks and minor troubleshooting of building systems such as the building alarm, HVAC etc.
  • Maintain a log sheet to track and record tasks undertaken during the shift
  • Perform checks of the general upkeep of external property
  • Assists the Assistant Property Manager in performing fire inspections in keeping with Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Immediately report safety concerns and major repair issues to the Assistant Property Manager and Property Manager
  • Assist the Assistant Property Manager during health and safety inspections
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security is maintained
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING IN:

  • Grade 12 plus two years of related experience: previous cleaning experience and familiarity with cleaning procedures and chemicals;
  • Previous experience in preventative maintenance programs and building maintenance experience
  • Various trade experiences would be an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively, ability to develop and maintain respectful relationships
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work
  • Familiar with computer operation
  • Must have completed or be willing to complete WHMIS training and First Aid/CPR
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training would be an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS

The performance of the job requires frequent use of cleaning equipment and tools Physical effort needed in mopping, sweeping, bending/twisting, lifting, climbing, carrying, ladder work, and painting Moderate to high levels of attention and concentration when using electrical or mechanical equipment. Care is required in the use of hazardous chemicals.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $21.84 with a maximum of $26.20. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
