Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The incumbent performs custodial, cleaning, minor maintenance, groundskeeping, and building-support duties to ensure the facility and surrounding property are clean, safe, secure, and well maintained. The incumbent may perform all, some, or a similar range of duties and responds to operational needs as directed by the supervisor.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
Custodial and Cleaning

Perform routine cleaning according to established schedules, rotations, duty lists, and work orders. Empty garbage and recycling receptacles; place bins out for collection and return them afterward. Vacuum carpets; sweep, mop, and wash floors; clean baseboards and accessible walls; strip and wax floors and shampoo carpets as required. Clean windows, glass, ledges, doors, offices, furnishings, fixtures, tables, chairs, and other surfaces. Clean and sanitize washrooms, including toilets, sinks, counters, mirrors, fixtures, and floors, and restock supplies and hand sanitizers. Maintain kitchens and common areas in a clean and sanitary condition, where applicable. Move, arrange, and clean furniture as required. Ensure assigned areas are clean, safe, orderly, and odor-free.

Building and General Maintenance

Conduct routine interior and exterior inspections and report safety, security, cleaning, or maintenance concerns. Perform minor repairs within established limits, including changing light bulbs, unblocking toilets, troubleshooting minor plumbing issues, wall patching/touch-up painting, and minor furniture or equipment repairs. Determine when maintenance concerns require referral to the supervisor or an external service provider. Check doors and windows as required to help maintain building security. Monitor supplies and advise the supervisor when replenishment is required. Maintain required duty logs, work orders, and mechanical/equipment-room records. Participate in scheduled building and systems checks. Support and coordinate scheduled visits from contractors, vendors, and service providers as directed. Complete assigned pick-ups and deliveries and respond to unexpected operational needs.

Grounds and Seasonal Maintenance

Maintain the exterior property, grounds, storage areas, and outdoor structures. Conduct regular exterior checks for safety and maintenance concerns. Keep entrances, sidewalks, and walkways clear of snow and ice and apply salt or approved ice-control products as required. Perform litter collection, lawn care, and general groundskeeping. Complete seasonal property-maintenance duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors within the ministry unit and outdoors on the surrounding grounds. Frequent use of cleaning equipment and tools is required, with appropriate care when handling chemicals and cleaners. Physical effort includes standing, walking, mopping, sweeping, bending, twisting, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, ladder work, and spot painting. Moderate to high attention and concentration are required when operating electrical or mechanical equipment. Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs are usually required. Outdoor duties may be performed in varying weather conditions. The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours. Evening or weekend work may be required according to operational needs and schedules.

Education

Completion of Grade 12 is a minimum requirement for this role.

Experience and Knowledge

Five years of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role. Familiarity with cleaning techniques, equipment, tools, and cleaning agents. Knowledge of custodial and basic building-maintenance practices and workplace health and safety requirements, including WHMIS. Basic computer skills.
