Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management is seeking a casual Maintenance Worker to support the Nanaimo community. You will perform day-to-day maintenance, inspect equipment, and assist in safety and security measures to ensure a clean, safe living environment for residents.

This role requires at least 1 year of related experience in building maintenance, knowledge of painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and heating systems, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of work experience related to building or community maintenance.
  • Knowledge of painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, heating systems and gardening.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.
  • A basic level of computer knowledge – Microsoft Office and maintenance software.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize maintenance schedules.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with residents, staff and contractors.
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Regular Maintenance, Repairs and Building Improvements: Inspects, operating condition of all equipment and logs information daily, diagnose malfunctions and recommends replacements or upgrades to Manager.
  • Regular Maintenance, Repairs and Building Improvements: Inspects alarm, call, and security systems and logs information daily.
  • Maintenance Management: Schedules and supervises service work in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.
  • Maintenance Management: Completes general repairs to electrical, plumbing and other building components appropriate with the capabilities of an experienced maintenance trade person.
  • Maintenance Management: Be available for emergency call-ins.
  • Maintenance Management: Maintains a painting/touch-up schedule.
  • Environmental Issues: Implements snow removal and de-icing program either directly or via a contractor as directed.
  • Environmental Issues: Support the pest control program.
  • Environmental Issues: Maintains organized and safe work and storage areas.
  • Fire & Life Safety: Assists in fire safety drills and complies with fire regulations.
  • Fire & Life Safety: Implements all repair and maintenance activities in a safe manner while abiding by appropriate Work Safe BC regulations.
  • Fire & Life Safety: Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and infection control procedures.

Salary Range: $22.50 To $25.82 Hourly

This position is covered under the HEABC wage levelling. Please note the wage is currently being adjusted and topped up by the government and the displayed wage is therefore reflective of such initiative. Location: Nanaimo Seniors Village - Nanaimo, BC

About the Role

The Maintenance Worker reports to the General Manager, Maintenance Manager or designateand is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance activities to support the efficient operation ofthe community. The Maintenance Worker assist in ensuring the safety and security of allpersons served, staff and visitors.

Responsibilities

Include but not limited to:

Regular Maintenance, Repairs and Building Improvements:

  3. Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
  4. - accident prevention,
  5. - knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,
  6. - the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs arenecessary, and
  7. - Utilizing infection control procedures
Maintenance Management:
  1. Maintains a log entry of daily routines, general repairs, scheduled, and non-scheduledmaintenance items on all equipment.
  2. Provides support or instruction to staff that may be operating the community’sequipment.
  3. Takes initiatives in gaining knowledge and skill relating to the maintenance position.
  4. Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings,committees and educational in-services.
  5. Required to work positively and collaboratively with all team members and supervisors.
  6. Always maintains a neat appearance and be attired in clean, safe and presentableclothing.
  7. Rubber-soled, steel-toed safety shoes when needed.
  8. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills:

  2. Knowledge of and capability to complete tasks relating to general painting, plumbing,carpentry, electrical, heating systems and gardening.
  3. Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.
  4. A basic level of computer knowledge – Microsoft Office and various maintenancesoftware.
  5. A demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize schedule of maintenance and workloadplanning.
  6. An ability to communicate professionally with residents, staff, visitors and contractors.
  7. All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Checkapplicable to Provincial guidelines.
  8. Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work withcleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment.
  9. Ability to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
  10. Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and writteninstructions.
