Job summary

3M in Brockville, ON seeks a Maintenance Technologist to perform preventive, corrective and diagnostic maintenance on a range of manufacturing machines within a world‑class team. You’ll develop and troubleshoot PLC programs, integrat e systems and support upgrades with engineering, maintenance and production.

New graduates are welcome; Controlled Goods Clearance is a mandatory pre‑requirement. Relocation is not authorized.

Qualifications

  • Technologist or Technician diploma completed before start.
  • 309A/433A/442A certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field is a plus.
  • 2–3 years of manufacturing experience in technical support roles with PLC programming.
  • 1 year of electro-mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and diagnostic maintenance on manufacturing equipment.
  • Read and interpret schematics; develop preventive maintenance schedules and conduct inspections.
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs to optimize production.
  • Integrate PLCs with automation systems and design control systems for efficiency.
  • Perform software updates and backups for PLCs and maintain documentation.
  • Test and validate PLC programs and control systems; identify improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance and production to support automation needs.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities and assist in reporting.

Job Description

3M is seeking a Maintenance Technologist for its Brockville, ON site. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic team environment, perform preventive, corrective, and diagnostic maintenance proficiently on a variety of innovative manufacturing machines, and will be challenged to apply knowledge and skills to achieve high personal and group performance working with a world‑class team. Safe, high‑quality diagnostics and repair are expected, and your creative and innovative improvement solutions are equally sought out. This role will appeal to Control Systems Technicians and Electrical Engineering Technologists. New graduates are welcomed to apply.

  • Successful security clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Registration program is a mandatory pre-requirement for this position at this location. Please note the following are some (but not all) of the listed requirements for Controlled Goods Clearance:
  • Must be a Canadian citizen normally residing in Canada, or must be a Permanent Resident normally residing in Canada
  • Must have valid and current identification (i.e.: driver’s license, passport, birth certificate)
  • Must be able to provide a residential address and employment history of the past 5 years
  • If applicable, living outside of Canada during the past five years will require an international criminal name check
The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
Responsibilities

As a Maintenance Technologist you will develop and support custom 3M manufacturing execution systems in an end-to-end automated manufacturing process. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform preventative, corrective, and diagnostic maintenance. Respond to basic emergency maintenance requests and breakdowns and assist in developing and implementing contingency plans to address potential equipment failures.
  • Read and interpret schematics and drawings. Assist in the development and implementation of preventive maintenance schedules for equipment and machinery and conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance tasks to ensure equipment is in good working condition
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs to optimize production processes and equipment functionality. Diagnose and resolve issues related to PLCs and control systems to minimize production downtime.
  • Integrate PLCs with other automation systems and equipment to ensure seamless operation and communication. Design and implement control systems using PLCs to enhance production efficiency and reliability.
  • Perform software updates and backups for PLCs and related control systems to maintain system integrity. Create and maintain documentation for PLC programs, system configurations, and changes.
  • Conduct testing and validation of PLC programs and control systems to ensure proper functionality and performance. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to PLC programs to enhance productivity.
  • Work closely with engineering, maintenance and production teams to support automation needs and resolve technical challenges. Assist in the installation and setup of new equipment and machinery and support the implementation of upgrades and modifications to existing equipment
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders and equipment history and assist in preparing maintenance reports and documentation as required. Follow safety regulations and company policies during all maintenance activities and participate in safety training and adhere to safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to address maintenance-related issues and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure alignment on maintenance tasks and priorities
  • Identify and suggest opportunities for process improvements in maintenance operations and participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects to enhance overall plant performance. Assist in managing spare parts inventory to ensure availability of critical components
Your Skills And Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M prefers the following qualifications:

  • Completion of Technologist or Technician diploma (completed and verified prior to start)

  • 309A/433A/442A certification

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics, automation technology, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of manufacturing experience in a technical support role, particularly with PLC programming, electrical and control systems.
  • 1 year of electro mechanics, pneumatics, and hydraulics experience
  • Good mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with little supervision in a team-oriented environment

The expected compensation range for this position is 79,326.90-96,955.10, which includes base pay and variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position.
