Job summary

UniFirst Canada is seeking a reliable Maintenance Technician II to join our Taber, Alberta team. The role involves repairs, maintenance, installation and troubleshooting of industrial equipment, systems, and components in a Monday–Friday work week with on‑the‑job training.

You will troubleshoot PLCs, follow schematics and manuals, perform boiler testing and safety checks, weld as needed, and use a CMMS to log activities. Strong reading of blueprints and safety awareness are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot equipment problems via observation and testing instruments.
  • Assist maintenance personnel with emergency and non-emergency repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair PLCs and control systems.
  • Follow blueprints, schematics, manuals and specs.
  • Perform boiler chemical and wastewater pretreatment testing and adjust chemicals.
  • Conduct daily/weekly boiler safety checks and repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain motors, belts, fluids, and replace filters.
  • Perform basic welding for repairs.
  • Inspect, clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears and parts.
  • Use a CMMS for maintenance records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Troubleshoot sources of equipment problems through observation and use of precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel with emergency and non-emergency repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and associated control systems.
  • Follow blueprints, schematics, operation manuals, manufacturer’s instructions, and engineering specifications.
  • Perform boiler chemical and wastewater pre-treatment system testing, record results in logbooks / computer systems and make necessary chemical adjustments as required.
  • Perform daily and weekly safety checks on boilers and make necessary repairs as required.
  • Inspect motor, belts, fluid levels, replace filters and perform other maintenance actions in accordance with maintenance procedures.
  • Performing basic welding activities to effect repairs on facilities and equipment.
  • Inspect, clean and lubricate shafts, bearings gears and other equipment parts in accordance with work procedures and technical manual.
  • Utilize a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications
What we’re looking for:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with valid non-commercial drivers license and safe driving record.
  • Must pass UniFirst’s maintenance knowledge assessment to be eligible for employment.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5th Class Power Engineer
  • Two-year technical degree in an appropriate background preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year work experience repairing industrial processing equipment in an industrial environment required. Applicable military experience will be considered.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics required.
  • Ability to read and understand maintenance literature printed in English required.
  • Basic computer and Microsoft office skills required.
  • Experience using Hand & Power tools required.
  • Lockout/Tagout experience required.
  • Prior welding experience including MIG, TIG, ARC, cutting, and brazing preferred.
  • Experience with formalized safety programs preferred.
  • Prior experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System preferred.
  • HVAC experience preferred.
  • Boiler knowledge preferred.

Ability to work overtime as needed is required.
