Join Our Team as a Maintenance Technician!

Position Status: Full Time

Location: West Kelowna, BC

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, Wednesday to Sunday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; may be required to work occasionally evenings based on operational needs.

Rate of Pay: $25.95 to $29.76 per hour

About Us:
Since 1980, the Central Okanagan Emergency Shelter Society (COESS), operating as Kelowna Women’s Shelter (KWS), has been dedicated to ending abuse and building hope. We provide a range of prevention, education, advocacy, and support services for individuals and children impacted by domestic abuse.

Role Overview:
As a Maintenance Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our West Kelowna facility is safe, functional, and welcoming. Your work will directly impact the well-being of our staff, program participants, and visitors. You will perform various tasks related to the upkeep, repair, and improvement of our building systems, equipment, and grounds. Reporting to the Facilities & Improvements Manager, you will also coordinate with external contractors and vendors as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facility Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on the building's interior and exterior, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and HVAC systems. Maintain common areas to ensure a tidy, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Follow all health and safety regulations, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and contribute to the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Adhere to the preventative maintenance schedule for all building systems and equipment. Document and report maintenance activities and any safety or operational concerns.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and work collaboratively with team members to minimize disruptions.
  • Emergency Response: Be available to respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests or emergencies, including after-hours or on-call assignments. Assist in the development and execution of emergency response plans.
  • Computer & Data Entry: Utilize building management software to process work orders, track maintenance tasks, and manage maintenance records. Perform accurate data entry and maintain comprehensive electronic records.

Key Competencies:

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of building maintenance and repair techniques, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC systems. Proficient in using a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Ability to identify maintenance issues and implement effective solutions promptly. Exercises sound judgment in assessing the urgency and priority of tasks.
  • Safety Awareness: Committed to maintaining a safe work environment by following health and safety guidelines and using appropriate PPE. Participates actively in safety training.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility: Responds effectively to changing priorities and emergency situations. Demonstrates flexibility in work hours to accommodate urgent maintenance needs.
  • Communication Skills: Communicates clearly and effectively with team members, supervisors, and external contractors. Provides timely updates on maintenance issues and progress.
  • Attention to Detail: Maintains a high standard of accuracy and quality in performing maintenance tasks. Ensures all work complies with safety regulations and building codes.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 10, plus related vocational training such as a building maintenance course.
  • Two years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations, including WHMIS and OH&S standards.
  • Experience with Arcori or similar maintenance software is preferred.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and moving equipment or materials. Tasks may require climbing ladders, bending, and working in confined spaces.

Job Requirements:

  • Valid BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Maintain a good standing with your driver’s abstract.
  • Successful completion of a vulnerable sector criminal record check.
