We are seeking a reliable, hands-on Maintenance Technician to support the day-to-day upkeep of our retirement communities. This role focuses on general repairs, routine and preventative maintenance, and ensuring residents live in a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment.
This is a practical, working role best suited for someone who enjoys problem-solving, working with their hands, and taking pride in maintaining high-quality living spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general maintenance and minor, non-certified repairs (including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting), and assess when work should be referred to licensed professionals
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely, respectful, and professional manner
- Repair and maintain doors, locks, fixtures, lighting, flooring, and appliances
- Complete minor drywall repairs, painting, and general touch-ups
- Assist with basic HVAC maintenance (e.g., filter changes and belt replacements)
- Support suite turnover (including repairs, painting, and minor fixes)
- Conduct basic property inspections and report larger issues to management
- Maintain safe, clean, and well-kept common areas, hallways, and outdoor spaces
- Perform seasonal duties such as snow removal and salting at entrances, exits, and walkways, along with light groundskeeping and daily garbage pickup around the building.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner
- Assist with furniture moves, waste removal, and general operational support as required
- Provide staff education to avoid repeated and/or similar issues or repairs
Work Locations
- Provide maintenance support across four (4) retirement community locations within HRM
- Travel between sites as required based on operational needs
On-Call Expectations
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule
- Respond to after-hours maintenance emergencies (e.g., leaks, power issues, safety concerns)
- Be reachable and able to respond within a reasonable timeframe while on call
Shuttle Responsibilities
- Provide shuttle driving for residents between communities, appointments, or scheduled outings
- Ensure the vehicle is clean and in good working condition, report maintenance concerns
- Follow all safety and driving regulations while transporting residents
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience in general maintenance, building maintenance, or handyman work
- Basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general building repairs
- Ability to assess issues, troubleshoot, and complete minor repairs independently
- Strong awareness of when to elevate work to qualified trades professionals
- Comfortable using hand and power tools safely
- Physically capable of lifting, climbing ladders, and performing active work throughout the day
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
