Rahr Malting Canada is looking for a Maintenance Tech to join our Team in Alix, Alberta. the Maintenance technician installs, maintains, and repairs plant machinery and equipment with minimal supervision. The Maintenance technician strives to keep all equipment and machinery in optimal working condition to maximize efficiency and productivity to manufacture top-quality malt in a safe environment.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs maintenance activities as part of a team of skilled trade workers to ensure safe and efficient operational success and prioritization of key company initiatives.
- Performs and documents scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance on plant assets, including plant area inspections, equipment rebuilds, asset replacement, and lubrication duties as assigned.
- Reads operational plans and schedules to complete the maintenance work that needs to be done.
- Maintains and updates maintenance records as required through computerized or paper-based maintenance management system.
- Adapts and troubleshoots reactive maintenance issues and equipment failures.
- Responds to unexpected breakdowns and performs critical repairs as required.
- Performs corrective maintenance on plant assets resulting from preventive maintenance issues as they arise.
- Partners with maintenance team on machinery and equipment installations. Reads and interprets layout, blueprint, and schematic drawings for the malting plant and associated facilities.
- Aligns and levels equipment using hoists, lift trucks, jacks, shims, plates, and other hand and power tools. Prioritizes quality and safety requirements with all equipment maintenance.
- Completes equipment repairs in a timely manner and restores to working order to meet production needs.
- Assists the team in keeping inventory of both spare parts and necessary parts on hand.
- Prioritizes productivity goals and minimization of equipment downtime to support the operational needs of the plant.
- Guides apprentices in the applied trade to encourage trade development.
- Assists operational leadership team with the repair and maintenance budget and provides input for capital projects as needed.
- Understands the significant food safety hazards of work activities and the food safety benefits of improved personal performance. Ensures ongoing safety standards are upheld.
- Performs role and responsibilities to achieve conformance with the food safety policy and procedures and with the requirements of the Food Safety Management System including the use of Management of Change documentation as well as the emergency preparedness and response requirements.
- Does not depart from specified operating procedures without first verifying with operational leadership whether the change will trigger any food safety hazards, adjusts as needed.
- Reports any unusual conditions in the plant or deviations from requested production parameters to operational leadership.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the company and its operational needs.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & WORK REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- 2+ years’ experience in a maintenance role including industrial equipment, inventory, repair logging, and preventative maintenance.
- Experience operating equipment such as welding equipment, forklift, hoists, riggings, and various hand and power tools.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Proven mechanical aptitude, technical skills, knowledge of maintenance procedures, and understanding of plant processes and equipment.

- Strong technical skills and knowledge of industrial equipment, PLC and process control systems, tool requirements for the preferred trade.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as layouts, blueprints, sketches, and maintenance instructions.
