Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY: MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR, MECHANICAL PORTFOLIO

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Maintenance and Technical Services (Mechanical Portfolio), the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and management of employees engaged in facility maintenance operations within an assigned trade portfolio.

The Maintenance & Construction Department is comprised of three Maintenance Supervisors, each accountable for a distinct maintenance portfolio:

  • Mechanical Portfolio (Plumbing, Heating, Gasfitting, Painting)
  • Electrical Portfolio (Electrical, Machinists, Sheet Metal)
  • Structural Portfolio (General Trades, Heat and Frost Insulators)

This position is responsible for the Mechanical Portfolio and provides leadership and supervision to Plumbing, Heating, Gasfitting, and Painting personnel across the District's facilities.

The Maintenance Supervisor plans, coordinates, organizes, and effectively directs maintenance operations, project work, contractor activities, and staff deployment throughout approximately 250 buildings and more than 100 sites. The position is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, efficient, and code-compliant operation of building systems while maintaining high levels of customer service and stewardship of District resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Supervision
  • Supervise employees engaged in Plumbing, Heating, Gasfitting, and Painting trades.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign, and monitor work activities.
  • Coordinate staffing resources and project priorities across multiple trade disciplines.
  • District ARO system management and guidance on lead-containing paint systems
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to staff.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, succession planning, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Participate in employee relations matters including investigations, discipline processes, grievances, and collective agreement administration in consultation with Human Resources.
Operations Management
  • Manage maintenance, repair, alteration, and renewal activities within the assigned portfolio.
  • Coordinate emergency response and service restoration activities.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs.
  • Ensure quality workmanship and adherence to established standards.
  • Coordinate work performed by contractors and consultants.
  • Maintain positive customer relations with school and department administrators, staff, contractors, and external agencies
Technical Oversight
  • Provide technical leadership related to:
  • Plumbing systems
  • Domestic water systems
  • Storm and sanitary drainage systems
  • Heating systems
  • Natural gas systems
  • Mechanical equipment and controls
  • Painting and surface protection programs
  • Review specifications, drawings, technical reports, and project documentation.
  • Support facility condition assessments and asset renewal planning.
Financial and Project Management
  • Prepare cost estimates and project budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures and control operational budgets.
  • Assist with capital planning and maintenance project development.
  • Manage multiple projects utilizing both in-house trades and external contractors.
  • Ensure projects are completed within approved budgets and timelines.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, codes, bylaws, regulations, and District policies.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices.
  • Conduct workplace inspections and investigations as required.
  • Support environmental sustainability initiatives and regulatory compliance requirements.


This position is currently 100% in-person at the Vancouver School Board Workshop (1549 Clark Dr, Vancouver) and will require travelling to various locations within the District.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Red Seal Certification in Plumbing, Steamfitting/Pipefitting, Gasfitting, or a related mechanical trade.
  • Minimum five years of progressive supervisory or management experience in a unionized maintenance, facilities, institutional, or construction environment.
  • Experience supervising multiple trades and coordinating contractors.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of plumbing, heating, gasfitting, and building mechanical systems.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
COMPENSATION

The compensation package will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The salary range for the position is $106,502 to $125,297 plus a comprehensive benefits package, including, Municipal Pension Plan, Deferred Savings plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, and 4 weeks of paid time off (pro-rated from start date).
