Our Howe Sound location has a current opening for a Maintenance Superintendent. This position is accountable for the overall organization, planning, budget, and execution of the mill maintenance program. The Maintenance Superintendent is the leader of a team responsible for maximizing long-term equipment availability within the cost constraints imposed. This role must also demonstrate a commitment safety working eliminate workplace injuries zero incidents maintain all ISO standards.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES & KEY ACTIVITIES:

  • In consultation with the Maintenance Supervisor, the Superintendent will determine when to engage contractors for addressing the maintenance backlog and emergency or break-in work. These decisions must align with the annual budget and will be accountable to the area Operations Group for related costs.
  • The Superintendent, in partnership with their operations counterpart, will establish priorities for failure analysis, issue resolution, and resource allocation. They will ensure alignment with maintenance plans and schedules.
  • They will lead area-specific improvement initiatives and determine spare parts stocking levels, reporting decisions and progress to the Maintenance Manager.
  • The Superintendent is responsible for reporting all safety and production-related incidents to the Maintenance Manager, along with the progress and outcomes of ongoing improvement efforts.
  • They will manage major break-in job decisions and escalate issues to the Maintenance Manager as appropriate.
  • The Superintendent will evaluate technical and interpersonal skill gaps among crew members, supervisors, and planners in their area. They may delegate training and coaching and recommend long-term development opportunities or system-wide improvements to the Manager.
  • To support growth and operational readiness, the Superintendent will stay current with technical and organizational developments by meeting with sales and technical professionals and may request training to address identified skill gaps or support career development.
  • They may also be assigned to lead or contribute to special projects, with specific responsibilities and accountabilities defined in collaboration with their Manager.
  • The Superintendent must ensure the safety of all employees in the Mechanical Maintenance Department, enforcing WCB regulations and company safety policies, while maintaining acceptable housekeeping standards across assigned departments.
  • They are expected to clearly communicate safety expectations, budgetary controls, planning and scheduling priorities, company policies, and contract management practices to supervisors and hourly staff.
  • The Superintendent will assist the Maintenance Manager in developing and managing the annual maintenance budget, ensuring compliance within their assigned areas.
  • They will oversee daily maintenance planning and execution, adherence to preventive maintenance schedules, coordination of effective area shutdowns, and long-term planning to protect and sustain mill assets.
  • The Superintendent is responsible for ensuring that all maintenance activities comply with applicable regulatory standards and HSPP programs and polices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A university degree in Engineering with at least five (5) years of experience in mill engineering, planning, or maintenance; or, trades certification in one or more relevant trades with seven (7) years of experience as a journeyperson.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience in a maintenance function, preferably in industrial environments such as manufacturing, mining, pulp and paper, or oil and gas.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, motivate, and develop teams of tradespeople, supervisors and planners to achieve operational and safety goals.
  • Adept at leading change, driving team accountability, and promoting collaboration across departments
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with a focus on building trust, resolving conflicts, and fostering a positive, safety-first culture.
  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance systems and best practices, including preventive and predictive maintenance and reliability-centered maintenance.
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms such as SAP, Maximo, or similar systems.
  • Solid understanding of equipment operations, repair methodologies, and root cause failure analysis.

Compensation & Benefits

$125,000 - $150,000 CAD per annum (Actual salary offer will be commensurate with education, experience and internal parity).
