Job summary

City of Mississauga is seeking a Maintenance Standards Road Technician to patrol and inspect municipal roads, identify hazards, document findings, and report to the Supervisor of Operations Program Coordination.

The role supports winter and summer maintenance, requires a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and willingness to work rotating shifts including weekends. A city vehicle is provided for field work.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Possess, or currently in the process of obtaining, a C.Tech or CET designation with OACETT.
  • Minimum of 2 years direct experience in municipal operations, maintenance or construction services.
  • Understanding of road maintenance procedures and materials used.
  • In-depth knowledge of MMS O. Reg 366/18.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out measurements and maintain records.
  • Proven time management and administrative skills, with strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
  • Must have strong computer skills (Excel, Word, INFOR, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual would be an asset.
  • General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and provincial road maintenance standards.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours (shiftwork, weekends/holidays).
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills and strong customer service.
  • Ability to work in a team environment while being self-motivated and cooperative.

  • Assist in maintenance of the City’s road classification system.
  • Perform weather monitoring duties during winter maintenance operations.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the City’s Vacuum Leaf Collection and Windrow Clearing program databases.
  • Provide leadership in delivering summer and winter maintenance programs per City standards.
  • Prepare and maintain daily patrol reports.
  • Respond to public complaints and service requests related to hazards and safety.
  • Perform supervisory duties to oversee contracted and union staff during emergency road work.
  • Appear in court to give evidence for property damage and personal injury cases.
  • Provide documentation to Risk Management for claims.
  • Complete special projects/research for reports as required.
  • Support 24/7 operations with rotating shifts; city vehicle provided.
  • Respond to after-hours calls and take appropriate action.

Job Summary

We are looking for enthusiastic, customer service-focused and team-oriented people to join the City of Mississauga’s team that helps keep our roads safe. The City’s Road Patrol Program operates on a 24-hours a day/7-days per week basis to ensure the safety of all our road users. Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations Program Coordination, you will be responsible for patrolling City roads to check, record and report any defects or hazardous conditions within the roadway.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct walking and driving inspections of City roads to identify, document, and report defects or hazardous conditions within the municipal road allowance. This includes reviewing roadways, shoulders, boulevards, sidewalks, signs, street lighting, and structures such as bridges to ensure compliance with MMS (O. Reg. 366/18) and established maintenance standards
  • Monitoring to ensure inspections are undertaken in a timely manner
  • Assist in maintenance of the City’s road classification system
  • Perform weather monitoring duties during the winter maintenance operations period
  • Assist in the maintenance of the City’s Vacuum Leaf Collection and Windrow Clearing program databases
  • Provide leadership in the delivery of summer and winter maintenance programs in accordance with City standards
  • Prepare and maintain daily patrol reports
  • Communicate, record and respond appropriately to public complaints and service requests related to immediate hazards and safety issues
  • Perform supervisory duties to oversee, approve, and call-in Contracted and Unionized staff in relation to emergency road work (i.e. sinkholes, failures, sweepers, spills, adverse weather conditions)
  • On occasion, appear in a Discovery of Court to give evidence regarding claims for property damage and personal injury
  • Provide documentation to Risk Management in response to claims
  • Complete special projects and research for reports and/or studies as required
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned, including working shifts and weekends in support of winter maintenance activities. A city vehicle will be provided to carry out these work activities
  • Respond to calls from the City’s after-hours answering service and take appropriate action
  • May require lifting up to 50 lbs. of supplies/equipment. Exposure to computer keyboards and screens
  • Rotational shifts may be required to cover a 24/7 operational schedule

Note: This position requires flexibility to work different hours, shifts, and days off to be considered.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology, or related field
  • Possess, or currently in the process of obtaining, a Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) or Technologist (C.E.T) designation with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience in a municipal operations, maintenance or construction services
  • Understanding of road maintenance procedures and materials used
  • In-depth knowledge of the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways O. Reg 366/18
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out measurements and maintain records of such

Proven time management and administrative skills, with strong attention to detail and analytical abilities

  • Must have strong computer skills/aptitude in office software and job-related software (i.e. Excel, Word, INFOR, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual would be an asset
  • General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and familiarity with provincial road maintenance standards
  • Must be available to work flexible hours (i.e. shiftwork and/or weekends/holidays). This position supports a 24/7 operation
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license with a clean record
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills along with strong customer service and conflict resolution skills to deal with staff and members of the public
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment while being self-motivated and cooperative
  • Knowledge of City's policies and procedures is an asset
  • Accepts and follows directions from others; complies with requests and respects authority
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking, independent judgement, and make sound decisions
