General Information

Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

A regular full time MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR position is available in Solid Waste Operations, within the Recycling and Waste Management Division in the Operations Department at the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Reporting to the Manager, Solid Waste Operations, the Maintenance Coordinator troubleshoots, coordinates and schedules the mechanical repair and maintenanceofindustrial equipment, fleet vehicles and solid waste site infrastructure to ensure that industrial equipment, fleet vehicles and solid waste site infrastructure assets owned and operated by the Recycling and Waste Management Division (RWWD) are in good working condition at all times. This positionmaintains aninventoryof supplies, prepares and maintains documents and accurate records regarding repairs, maintenance and inspections, and maintains the asset inventory in the asset management software database. This position also performs research and evaluations and provides input on technical requirements and specifications to be incorporated into maintenance management, infrastructure projects and maintenance standard operating procedures. This work supports the delivery of solid waste services to the public through the application and exploration of cost-effective solutions that align with the regional Solid Waste Management Plan and other CVRD Board-approved strategies and plans, including but not limited to the Asset Management Plan and the Climate Adaptation Strategy.

Qualifications
  • A certificate from a recognized technical institute or community college in a field related to maintenance management, asset management, project management. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience coordinating the mechanical repair and maintenance of industrial equipment, fleet vehicles and infrastructure, troubleshooting and performing basic diagnostics, documenting and maintaining detailed accurate records in the asset inventory database, preferably within a local government setting. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or project lead role
  • Certification in Maintenance Management Professional (MMP)
  • Heavy-Duty Mechanical Foundations
  • Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement
  • First Aid Level II (Intermediate First Aid) certificate and CPR certificates (applicants not possessing this will have 60 days from a start date to obtain this certification)
  • Skid Steer Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Front End Loader Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Excavator Operator Safety Training certificate from a qualified instructor – employer provided
  • Fall Protection Training – employer provided
  • Confined Space Training – employer provided
  • Project Management Professional certificate (PMP) is preferred
  • Asset Management Professional certificate (AMP) is preferred
  • Contract Management training (or other related discipline) is preferred
  • Construction Management training (or other related discipline) is preferred

Hours of Work

Guaranteed 40 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday. This position may be required to attend urgent maintenance requests or meetings during evenings and or on weekends.

Salary

This position is unionized (USW Local 1-1937). The Step 1 wage rate is $37.11 per hour and the Step 2 wage rate is $39.43 per hour (2023 wage rates).
