Job details

School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan) is seeking a Maintenance Manager - Grounds. The district operates within the unceded, Traditional Territory of the Okanagan syilx peoples. It serves over 25,500 students across various schools and educational centers in the Central Okanagan region, including Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country. The district is committed to providing inclusive, student-centered programs and fostering equity and holistic development.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will report to the Assistant Director of Operations and Maintenance and must demonstrate excellent organizational and prioritization skills, the ability to manage a high-paced workload, strong employee management and interpersonal skills, and a proven track record of team building and collaboration across departments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Manage, schedule, and supervise a multidisciplinary team within a unionized environment.
  2. Implement best practices to improve grounds maintenance efficiency and quality.
  3. Oversee all aspects of grounds maintenance for district facilities, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and upkeep.
  4. Promote a culture of health and safety within the department.
  5. Develop maintenance schedules, assess project timelines, monitor budgets, and communicate regularly with the Assistant Director.
  6. Coordinate snow removal, repairs, and alterations across district sites and equipment.
  7. Manage projects funded through various sources related to grounds maintenance.
  8. Ensure compliance with safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  9. Establish onboarding and training programs focusing on safety, grounds, and security.
  10. Support resource management and ensure project completion within budget and schedule.
  11. Plan and implement site and service upgrades, consulting with relevant stakeholders.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes
  • Diploma in Landscape, Horticulture, Civil Technology, Project Management, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience, including 3 recent years in facilities or project management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Relevant trade certification (asset).
  • Extensive knowledge of facility management, grounds practices, turf management, horticulture, and preventative maintenance.
  • Experience with building maintenance, electrical, mechanical systems, and contract management.
  • Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and security systems.
  • Proficiency in Windows OS, Microsoft Office, and Outlook.
