  • Perform minor shop repairs and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure traffic control signage and safety measures at sites.
  • Adhere to Provincial Occupational Health and Safety rules and environmental requirements.

Job Title: Machine Operator/Labourer

Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with the Town of Antigonish to recruit a Machine Operator/Labourer to join their Public Works Department in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

The Town of Antigonish is a vibrant and growing community committed to delivering high-quality municipal services to residents and businesses.

As part of the Public Works Department, you will support the delivery of essential municipal services through the operation of heavy equipment, infrastructure maintenance, and snow and ice control activities throughout the Town.

This is a permanent, full-time, unionized position with regular hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. The successful candidate must be available for standby and after-hours emergency call-out assistance as required.

Role Description

Reporting to the Superintendent of Public Works, the Machine Operator/Labourer is responsible for operating assigned Public Works equipment and supporting municipal infrastructure maintenance activities. This role plays an important part in ensuring the safe and effective operation of municipal services while maintaining compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Operating assigned Public Works equipment including backhoes, mini excavators, wheel loaders, salt trucks, street sweepers, and sidewalk plows.
  • Undertaking regular municipal system operations and equipment maintenance activities.
  • Completing municipal mainline and service lateral repairs.
  • Assisting with hydrant and water valve maintenance, sanitary sewer collection system requirements, and related municipal infrastructure work.
  • Performing street repair work as well as concrete sidewalk, curb, and gutter repairs.
  • Supporting snow and ice control operations as required.
  • Completing job records and documentation associated with assigned work.
  • Performing minor shop repairs and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ensuring traffic control signage, safety measures, and inspection requirements are maintained at work sites.
  • Complying with Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and supporting environmental management system requirements.
  • Participating in standby and emergency call-out duties as required.
Your Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you are a safety-conscious and dependable individual with experience operating heavy equipment and supporting municipal services. You take pride in maintaining public infrastructure and can work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Key qualifications include:
  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Previous experience operating and/or maintaining heavy equipment, such as loaders, excavators, graders, backhoes, dump trucks, and other fleet equipment.
  • Ability to undertake municipal mainline and service lateral repairs related to water and sewer infrastructure.
  • Ability to perform street repairs, concrete sidewalk, curb, and gutter repairs, and snow and ice control activities.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Ability to maintain accurate job records and perform minor shop repairs.
  • A valid Nova Scotia Class 3 Driver's License is required.
  • Ability to attain and maintain Nova Scotia Environment Operator Certification.
  • Availability for rotational standby duty and after-hours emergency service work.
  • Due to the nature of the role, a requirement is that your principal residence is located within a reasonable travelling distance of the Antigonish Public Works Department.

Preference will be given to candidates with two (2) or more years of experience related to the duties of the position.
