Job summary

City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated professional to join our transit team, reporting to the Senior LRT Signals Engineer. You will provide critical engineering, technical, and administrative support for the management, maintenance, and capital upgrade of our LRT signal system infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in railroad signal design, construction and maintenance.
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA; IPMA eligibility may be considered.

  • Monitor the age, condition, capacity, and functionality of LRT signal system infrastructure to meet safety and operational requirements.
  • Develop and manage preventative maintenance programs, establish performance targets, and ensure equipment reaches its design life per manufacturer guidance.
  • Initiate, design, and implement signal system modifications to enhance safety and reliability.
  • Manage construction and service contracts with consultants and contractors per City outsourcing policies.
  • Design and execute testing and commissioning documentation for new or modified systems.

Job description

The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated professional to join our transit team. Reporting to the Senior LRT Signals Engineer, you will provide critical engineering, technical, and administrative support for the management, maintenance, and capital upgrade of our LRT signal system infrastructure. In this role, you will be directly accountable to the citizens of Edmonton and surrounding communities to deliver safe, reliable, and high-quality transit services. Your responsibilities will include developing maintenance, repair, and capital budget requirements in accordance with City policy, as well as providing essential engineering support to contractors delivering preventative maintenance and repair services. As a signals technical expert, you will provide supervisory guidance to contractors managing signals equipment and electronic control systems. You will hold formal accountability for approving reports and work related to system modifications, specifications, drawings, and incident investigations. Additionally, you will collaborate across departments to design interfaces with Traffic Operations and traction power systems, ensuring the seamless, efficient, and safe operation of Edmonton's LRT trains.

What will you do?
  • Monitor the age, condition, capacity, and functionality of LRT signal system infrastructure to guarantee it meets all safety and operational requirements
  • Develop and manage preventative maintenance programs, establish performance targets, and ensure equipment reaches its full design life in accordance with manufacturer recommendations
  • Initiate, design, and implement signal system modifications—including altering application logic files and updating systems to support external work groups—to enhance safety and reliability
  • Develop, manage, and administer construction and service contracts with consultants and contractors, ensuring strict compliance with City of Edmonton outsourcing policies
  • Design and execute comprehensive testing and commissioning documentation for new or modified systems to ensure safe integration and operation
  • Identify capital budget requirements, manage approved funds, monitor expenditures, and prepare monthly variance reports and year-end cost projections
  • Prepare technical drawings for specific equipment lifecycle replacements (e.g., Switch Machines, Speed Checks) and draft precise specifications for ARINC system updates
  • Review proposals from City planners, Traffic Operations, and consultants, providing expert engineering recommendations on major construction programs impacting the signal system
  • Prepare analytical technical reports and correspondence for senior management, City Council, regulatory agencies, and the general public
  • Maintain a rigorous record management system for all signals documentation while liaising with other transit agencies to exchange industry best practices
Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in railroad signal design, construction and maintenance
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
Skills required for success:
  • Signal Systems Expertise: Proven knowledge and hands-on experience in the design of LRT or train signaling systems
  • Project & Contract Management: Demonstrated experience managing projects and consultants, including tendering, administering contracts, estimating costs, and budgeting
  • Communication & Technical Writing: Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, with a strong ability to write technical reports and specifications
  • Interpersonal & Technical Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills paired with proficiency in the Google Office suite and computer-based control and maintenance systems

Conditions of employment & work environment:
  • Up to: 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $94,870.14 - $118,585.27 (Annually)
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
