Your role

We break stories at CBC News. Our focus is on original journalism, finding the angles that matter to our audience, and telling stories that are rooted in our English-speaking communities in Montreal and across the province. We are fast and accurate with breaking and developing news. Our digital news is the best in the city and the province.

In accordance with the Corporation’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, as the weekday digital copy editor, you will ensure the accurate and efficient delivery of news and features to CBC’s digital, social, and video news platforms

CBC Montreal is looking for an experienced copy editor to join our digital team. The successful candidate will be an accomplished journalist and an excellent news editor with a sharp eye for a range of stories that connect with readers here and across the country. We’re seeking a critical thinker who is capable of working collaboratively as part of the broad newsroom team.

You have attention to detail and high-quality standards. You write sharp headlines and engaging digital news copy. You prepare and package text and video for publishing with audience needs at the forefront. You are proficient in leveraging visual storytelling tools and techniques, and adapting to evolving technologies.

You bring to the role experience and knowledge of digital news, visual storytelling, social media

strategies, copy editing, metrics, and new story treatments. You will work closely with our journalists, video and radio producers and editors, and play a key role in the digital rollout of editorial projects including community initiatives. You will track our results and share our daily successes with the CBC team.

This is a permanent full-time position. For reference purposes, this position is from 12-8 p.m. Monday to Friday but may be modified and is dependent on production needs.

Tasks:

  • Copy edit and package digital content (digital news stories, long-form, video, audio).
  • Attend story meetings for daily and special-event coverage.
  • Assign writers, both from inside CBC and from the community.
  • Work with reporters, writers and producers to develop story structure, packaging and
  • structure.
  • Vet reporters’ work prior to publishing on digital platforms and social media. Request changes,
  • if necessary.
  • Providing feedback to teammates.
  • Collaborate on the creation of video for owned and operated platforms and social media.
  • Do interviews and write stories.
  • Maintain a network of contacts.
  • Monitor and share metrics to ensure content is aligned with CBC strategic and community.
  • goals.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent.
  • Five (5) years’ journalism degree or the equivalent.

Skills:

  • Extensive general knowledge.
  • In-depth knowledge of current events and news across the province.
  • Connection to and understanding of Quebec’s diverse and underrepresented communities.
  • Substantial experience copy editing, fact-checking, writing and packaging news content (text, video and audio).
  • Deep desire to make our digital offering the best in the market.
  • Strong vetting skills for digital copy.
  • Excellent reporting, interviewing and writing skills.
  • Proven ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information.
  • Proven mentorship and training skills.
  • Ability to think critically and work independently.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work effectively, collaboratively and gracefully.
  • under 24/7 newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Aptitude with text and video content management systems.
  • Active user of social media platforms.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Fluency in the working language (English).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the other official language (French).
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Must be available to work all shifts, depending on the assignment.
