Your role
We break stories at CBC Quebec and are first to deliver developing news. We prioritize original journalism, finding the angles that matter to our audience, and telling stories that are rooted in the English-speaking communities in Quebec.
CBC Quebec is looking for a National Lineup Editor based in Montreal to implement our digital strategy regionally and oversee digital content and publishing for CBC’s website, News app and social media platforms for Quebec. The National Lineup Editor supervises a team of 10 digital journalists, a copy editor and digital video lineup editor and is one of the senior editorial leaders in the newsroom.
We are seeking a collaborative leader with strong critical-thinking skills and experience in digital storytelling, assignment and content production. The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of audience needs and a passion for community engagement.
You bring to the role experience and knowledge of digital news, video storytelling, social media
strategies, strong writing, copy editing and audience engagement metrics.
We are seeking a candidate who is innovative and will champion new story treatments, support evolving workflows, and will help create a diverse range of content on our platforms.
As the supervisor of the Quebec digital team, based in Montreal, you need to be agile in assigning both breaking news and longer-term, high-impact projects. Communication and feedback are central to this role. You will work closely with assignment editors, producers and journalists on all platforms and play a key role in the digital rollout of editorial projects including community initiatives.

You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories and videos are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
You will coordinate with CBC News digital leaders across the country to champion journalism from Quebec and share best practices.
This is a permanent full-time position. For reference purposes, this position is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday but may be modified and is dependent on production needs.
Function
Oversee the production of news content and more specifically, digital formats.
Prepare the lineup (page layout) of international, national and regional news for newscasts and new-media platforms. Suggest subjects and assist journalists with their digital reports. Determine the right format for the content and follow through with assignment officers and all the platforms for optimal delivery.
Supervise the release or airing of content for the various news platforms in accordance with corporate standards and policies.
Tasks
- Keep up with regional, national and international affairs, relying on various sources.
- Seek, gather, analyze, check and select reports and news items for newscasts or Information new-media platforms. Identify sources and check facts.
- Attend story meetings for daily, upcoming and special-event coverage. Suggest story ideas and discuss story angles with your colleagues. Prepare the newscast lineup (page layout).
- Maintain a network of contacts sources.
- Assign and coordinate editorial newscast preparation (copy, audio/-video editing, headlines and presentations/intros), interview- preparation, and source-checking work.
- Select audio and video clips. Adapt the content of these clips or reports for various newscast formats.
- Monitor news developments with an eye on deadlines and change newscast content accordingly. For new media, ensure that platforms under your control are continuously updated.
- Review and correct the work of reporters before broadcasts or online posting. Vet the reports that will be aired or posted. Request changes if necessary.
- Determine story angles. Write copy, headlines and intros in the appropriate style.
- Determine the newscast lineup (page layout). For new media, ensure that each news item is accompanied by the necessary text (title, headlines) and audio and audiovisual elements. For television, supervise newscast content during presentation. For radio, supervise presentations. In the control room, instruct and inform team members. While the newscast is airing, decide whether the lineup should be changed to reflect breaking news.Advise the newsroom or website supervisor of any events that deserve special coverage on air or on-line.
- After a broadcast, provide feedback to reporters and management. Review the newscast if necessary.
- For new media, determine the editorial content, graphics, tables and maps needed and request them. Help develop a special coverage and layout plan, depending on the significance of news items. Ensure that the contents of the image bank, reports and hyperlinks are relevant. Help organize and participate in interactive activities (talkbacks, chats, forums).
- Fill in as a reporter or assignment editor as needed.
- Perform all other related duties as needed.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Seven years’ experience in journalism or equivalent.
- Strong journalistic skills, with excellent news judgment and the ability to work effectively under 24/7 online newsroom deadline pressure.
- Superior leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, with the demonstrated ability to motivate teams and encourage creativity.
- Values teamwork and demonstrates inclusive and collaborative leadership.
- Fluency in English.
- Proficiency in written and oral French.
- Extensive general knowledge of Quebec, especially the province’s English-speaking communities.
- Experience developing and executing strategies including setting objectives, tracking results and reporting on outcomes.
- Solid command of communication skills specific to medium, as well as interview techniques, along with experience in a digital environment.
- Thorough knowledge of newsroom logistics.
- Advanced skills in digital production, presentation and analytics tools, including content management systems, video editing programs and social media platforms.
- Familiarity with 9CMS, Polopoly, Chartbeat, MiR, Airship, Adobe products and audio/video management systems such as Avid NewsCutter, Media Central and Dalet Plus.
- Extensive knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Must be available to work all shifts, depending on the assignment.
