Animal Science and Aquaculture Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada

The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture invites applications from qualified candidates for a one-year limited-term Veterinary Technology position within our Veterinary Technology Diploma program, at the Instructor rank. This position will be located in the Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture offers a stimulating academic environment featuring a breadth of expertise, a strong applied research focus, and linkages across the university and beyond.

he successful applicant will teach practical labs in person. Teaching classroom/lecture content could be either online or in a classroom setting. Some curriculum development or revision will be required and will require collaboration and attention to program learning outcomes. The instructor will ensure all teaching animals are treated humanely and have all necessary needs met and will communicate with attending veterinarian and/or program coordinator if any concerns are found. The successful applicant will be responsible to design and mark course assessments and ensure timely feedback to students.

There will also be shared, rotating duties with other instructors for our teaching hospital (no public patients). Some labs and clinical work may be required outside of usual working hours.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in veterinary technology faculty and other meetings. They will be expected to follow guidance from the program coordinator to ensure courses meet program goals and objectives especially with regard to C.V.M.A. accreditation requirements, N.S.V.M.A. or C.C.A.C. guidelines. Participation in the annual program advisory meeting is expected and usually falls on one weekend per year. The applicant will follow established Standard Operating Procedures and be aware of and follow all necessary safety procedures and policies established by the university and program.

The position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture.

Qualifications for the Position

Veterinary Technology diploma from a C.V.M.A. accredited program with approximately three years' relevant experience in companion animal private practice is required. Must be a Registered Veterinarian Technician eligible to work in Nova Scotia. Must be a member in good standing with the Eastern Veterinary Technician Association or eligible for membership prior to the start date.

Applicants must have demonstrated competency in companion animal surgical assisting, routine clinical pathology procedures, and veterinary nursing procedures such as blood collection, anesthesia, dentistry, and radiology. The applicant must possess proficiency in routine clinical skills and theory utilized in lab animal and exotic pet medicine. Proven excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required as is the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Must have demonstrated solid computer skills and be familiar with lab safety guidelines.

Teaching experience is desirable. Please describe any formal teaching experience or mentoring that you have had in either a classroom, online, or practical setting.

Demonstrated experience with curriculum development or writing original content for the purpose of public education would be considered an asset. Teaching duties will require the use of PowerPoint, BrightSpace (our LMS system), Microsoft Teams, and Collaborate. Experience with these tools and platforms will also be considered an asset.

The successful candidate may be expected to co-teach whether in a lab or classroom. For example, in a clinical setting the applicant will coordinate with other instructors to carry out their assigned roles and ensure a safe and effective teaching environment in a companion animal surgical lab or lab animal setting.

The applicant must be competent in all clinical R.V.T. instructor roles and flexible as reassignment may be necessary.
