Job summary

Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo invites applications for a Limited Term Contract position in the Department of Sociology. The instructor will teach undergraduate Sociology courses in person at the Nanaimo Campus and deliver online sections, including SOCI 111 and SOCI 204, across Spring 2027.

The role requires effective teaching, student support during office hours, and participation in committees and department activities.

Qualifications

• PhD in Sociology from an appropriately accredited institution.
• Record of successful undergraduate teaching.
• Responsiveness to diverse learning styles and cultural and academic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Demonstrated technological competencies related to teaching and participation in institutional and departmental activities.
• Experience using a common learning management system, such as Desire2Learn, Blackboard, or Moodle.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate sociology courses, in person at the Nanaimo Campus and online.

Duties:

VIU's Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a Limited Term Contract (LTC) position in the Department of Sociology. We seek an experienced instructor to teach undergraduate courses in Sociology. Instruction includes preparation and delivery of lectures, assessment and evaluation of students, facilitation of students' learning, and provision of student support during office hours. The courses will be taught in person at the Nanaimo Campus and delivered online. The courses include: Spring 2027 - Spring classes start January 4, 2027 SOCI 111 S27W01: Introduction to Sociology Delivery mode: online asynchronous SOCI 111 S27N04: Introduction to Sociology Tuesday and Thursday 11:30-13:00 Delivery mode: Face-to-Face Nanaimo Campus SOCI 204 S27N01: Social Interaction Monday and Wednesday 11:30-13:00 Delivery mode: Face-to-Face Nanaimo Campus SOCI 330 S27N01: Social Relations Across the Life Course Tuesday and Thursday 14:30-16:00 Delivery mode: Face-to-Face Nanaimo Campus Course descriptions and more information about the Sociology Department are available on their program page.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
