Job summary

Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo seeks a faculty member to teach a range of undergraduate mathematics courses, from introductory service courses to upper-level classes (300-level and above) and supervise senior capstone-style projects. The role aims to contribute to program growth and student success.

Responsibilities

• Teach a range of undergraduate mathematics courses from service to upper-level (300-level and above).
• Supervise senior MATH 491 Undergraduate Research Project students where applicable.
• Engage in activities beyond the classroom including student support and committee work.
• Participate in institutional service and professional activities in the discipline.

Job description

Duties:

Teach a range of undergraduate mathematics courses. The department offers programs leading to both BA and BSc degrees (minors and majors) and is seeking individuals to actively contribute to program growth. Teaching duties range from introductory service courses at the first- and second-year level to upper-level mathematics courses (300-level and above) listed on the departmental website. Duties may also include supervision of students completing the senior MATH 491 Undergraduate Research Project course.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics from an appropriately accredited institution.
• Demonstrated record of teaching excellence at the post-secondary level.
• Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and commitment to a team-based working culture.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with course and program development.
• Experience with online learning management systems such as D2L.
