Job summary

The District of Stewart is seeking a Light Equipment Operator to support Public Works operations. The successful candidate will operate light mobile equipment and perform related duties, with independence and responsibility in day-to-day tasks.

Minimum Grade 12 and a Class 5 driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement are required. Opportunities for growth and certification exist within the organization.

Qualifications

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Class 5 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement (or better); provide current driver’s abstract.

Responsibilities

  • Operate light mobile equipment (plow trucks, garbage truck, sweeper, skid steer) safely and efficiently.
  • Perform snow removal, sidewalk clearing, and drainage ditch maintenance.
  • Carry out minor maintenance and other duties as assigned.

THE DISTRICT OF STEWART is currently seeking applications for one (1) Light Equipment Operator to support Public Works operations.

At the same time, this position offers a high degree of independence and responsibility in the day-to-day operation of light equipment.

Tasks, Preferred Experience & Attributes
Duties:

The Light Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and minor maintenance of light mobile equipment (Plow Trucks, Garbage Truck, Sweeper, Skid Steer, etc.), as well as the performance of manual duties such as: snow removal, sidewalk clearing, and drainage ditch maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Applicants must be able to legally work in Canada
  • Grade 12 Education or equivalent
  • Class 5 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement or better (Please provide a current driver’s abstract)
  • Proven ability to follow direction, but self motivation to finish tasks and address what needs attention.
  • Safe work attitude
  • Considerable experience in the operation and servicing of light mobile equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Good physical condition and the ability to perform heavy manual labour
  • Ability to work independently in the accomplishments of tasksAbility to deal effectively with co-workers and the public
  • A Class 3 Driver’s license would be an asset.
Desirable Attributes:
  • Experience with public works functions, including roads, water, wastewater, facility maintenance as well as parks care.
  • Experience with the use and maintenance of public works tools and equipment
  • First Aid Certification
  • Preference given to those with Small Water Wastewater Certification

This position is covered by the Collective Agreement between the District of Stewart and CUPE Local 1804.

The current rate as of January 2026 for this position $38.99 per hour.
