Job summary

YMCA BC in Surrey, BC is seeking a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor for the Tong Louie Family YMCA. The role is part-time permanent with 4–24 hours weekly, starting September 2026.

You will guard, teach lessons, engage with members, and support safety and program delivery in a dynamic aquatics setting. You must hold Standard First Aid, CPR C with AED, and National Lifeguard; YMCA Aquatic Fitness certification is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 3 years).
  • CPR Level C and AED (valid within 1 year).
  • National Lifeguard - Pool Option certification is required.
  • YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate or equivalent is preferred.
  • Successful candidates provide a current Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Provide 3 satisfactory references.

Responsibilities

  • Guard and teach swimming lessons in a positive, professional manner.
  • Build relationships with members, visitors and colleagues.
  • Promote YMCA Strong Kids Campaign through engagement.
  • Develop lesson plans and evaluate participants progressively.
  • Ensure program design and layout meet participant needs.
  • Lead program delivery and ensure content meets criteria.
  • Perform administrative duties and maintain records.
  • Uphold YMCA safety standards across facilities and locker rooms.
  • Assist training of new staff/volunteers and remain flexible.
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events.

Job description

Location: Tong Louie Family YMCA (14988 57th Ave., Surrey, BC V3S 7S6)

Term: Part-Time Permanent

Hours: 4 -24 hours per week

Shift: Shifts vary but include weekdays, evenings, and weekends

Start Date: September 2026

Salary: $23.59 per hour

Reports To: Supervisor, Aquatics

Nature & Scope

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatics Supervisor and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment.

Major Responsibilities in this position, you will:
  • Guarding and teaching swimming lessons in a positive and professional manner
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
  • Develop lesson plans for various programs and administer progressive evaluations for participants
  • Ensure program design, lay-out, and offerings meet the needs of all participants at various levels
  • Lead program delivery, while ensuring contents meet the appropriate criteria and outline
  • Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff, including all locker rooms and spectator viewing areas.
  • Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices
  • Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
Qualifications - you bring :
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 3 years)
  • CPR level C and & AED certificate (valid within 1 year)
  • National Lifeguard - Pool Option
  • Experience as a Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor - preferred
  • YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate, or equivalent – preferred
  • Access to reliable transportation or a vehicle
  • Advanced leadership courses are an asset
  • Demonstrated high level of customer service skills
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
