Job summary

YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking a Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner to support programs at The Steve & Sally Stavro YMCA H&F Centre in Toronto. You will teach courses, examine participants, and ensure safety protocols are followed.

Applicants must hold NL, Standard First Aid and CPR Level C or equivalent, have strong communication and organizational skills, and be available for early mornings, days, evenings or weekends. Contract position with start Sept 18, 2026.

Qualifications

• Current NL certification with standard first aid and CPR-C.
• Experience teaching Lifesaving Society courses is an asset.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Teach aquatic Lifesaving courses following Lifesaving Society criteria.
• Examine participants to assess competencies per standards.
• Plan, organize, and implement course lesson plans.
• Maintain safety procedures and respond to emergencies as trained.
• Collaborate with YMCA staff and volunteers to support programs.
• Ensure certifications are current as required by regulations.

The Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner, teaches and examines specific course content, using Lifesaving Society and YMCA equipment, resources and materials. Instructors develop course lesson plans that incorporate different learning styles.

In this role, you will:

• Teach in the aquatic area, ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are followed, and respond in emergencies as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
• Deliver course content and examine participants following Lifesaving Society criteria.
• Plan, organize, and implement course lesson plans.
• Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly.
• Coach and develop participants for success.
• Ensure qualifications and certifications are current as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards.
• Participate actively in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
• Collaborate with program members, volunteers, and YMCA staff, assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

You Bring:

• Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL), Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification OR Intermediate First Aid and CPR level C certification issued by a WSIB approved provider prior to the first day of work , Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner
• Previous experience Instructing Lifesaving Courses an asset
• Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with participants
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail
• Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends

• Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
