Job summary

YMCA BC is seeking a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor in Chilliwack, BC. Primary location: Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre; secondary: Cheam Leisure Centre. Part-time, permanent, 4–24 hours per week. Shifts include weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Salary: $23.59–$26.08 per hour for Lifeguard and Lifeguard/Swim Instructor roles. Start date ASAP.

You will guard, teach swimming, develop lesson plans, enforce safety rules, and support member engagement while upholding YMCA standards.

Qualifications

• Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 3 years).
• CPR level C and AED certificate (valid within 1 year).
• National Lifeguard - Pool Option required.
• YSI or Swim Instructor Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Guard and teach swimming lessons in a positive, professional manner.
• Develop and lead lesson plans for programs and administer evaluations.
• Enforce pool rules and safety regulations; perform water rescues and first aid/CPR when needed.
• Build relationships with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues to foster a welcoming environment.
• Perform routine pool maintenance and general administrative duties as needed.
• Ensure safety by following YMCA standards and promoting EDIB.

Position Title: Lifeguard/Swim Instructor (Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor)

Location: Primary: Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre - 9145 Corbould St, Chilliwack, BC V2P 4A6 (Primary)

Secondary: Cheam Leisure Centre - 45501 Market Way, Chilliwack, BC V2R (Secondary)

Terms: Part-Time, Permanent

Hours: 4-24 hours per week

Shift: Shifts vary but will include weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Guard coverage needed weekdays 6am-3pm, Instructor coverage needed weekdays 4pm-8pm

Start Date: As soon as possible

Salary: $23.59 (Lifeguard) - $26.08 (Lifeguard/Swim Instructor) per hour

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatics Supervisor and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment.

Major Responsibilities - in this position, you will:

• Guard and teach swimming lessons in a positive and professional manner
• Develop and lead lesson plans for various programs and administer progressive evaluations for participants
• Enforce pool rules and safety regulations
• Perform water rescues and administer first aid or CPR when necessary
• Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
• Perform routine pool maintenance, as required
• Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities
• Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property, by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained among all members and staff
• Promote philanthropy through the annual fundraiser campaign
• Strong work ethic and able to remain flexible
• Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices

Qualification - you bring:

• Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 3 years)
• CPR level C and AED certificate (valid within 1 year)
• National Lifeguard - Pool Option
• YSI or Swim Instructor Certification
• Experience as a Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor - preferred
• Advanced leadership courses are an asset
• Demonstrated high level of customer service skills
• Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
