Job description

Since 2000, the Glenn Carpenter Center has empowered youth through outdoor education, creativity, and skill development. Our mission is to equip youth with the tools, confidence, and compassion to become future leaders. The YMCA Glenn Carpenter Center is a non-denominational day camp open to all.

Position Overview

As a member of the Glenn Carpenter Center staff, the Head Lifeguard and Day Camp Counsellor will supervise the waterfront and deliver quality programming for all participants. The successful candidate will collaborate with staff and volunteers to develop programs that promote the physical, mental, and social health of children and youth, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment.

The camp is located on Foster Thurston, offering a wilderness setting with over 250 acres of forest, a private lake, trails, an archery field, sports field, beach, and more. Programs include traditional and specialty camps such as babysitting, mountain biking, and climbing.

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervise up to 15 children aged 5-13, providing positive leadership.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver daily camp activities.
  • Lead specific activities ensuring safety and engagement.
  • Maintain surveillance and safety at swimming and canoe/kayak areas, adhering to safety procedures.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, providing first aid and calling for medical assistance when needed.
  • Model appropriate behaviors aligned with YMCA values and establish rapport with participants and staff.
  • Maintain a safe, organized environment and ensure equipment is properly cared for.
  • Communicate facility guidelines to ensure safety and prevent incidents.
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing training.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience in youth programs or day camps.
  • Previous lifeguarding experience and current NLS Waterfront certification or willingness to obtain.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Flexible schedule and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors all day and in a team environment.
  • Clear criminal background check, including Vulnerable Sector Search.
