Since 2000, Glenn Carpenter Center has been empowering youth through outdoor education, creativity, and skill development. Our mission is to equip youth with the tools, confidence, and compassion to become future leaders. The YMCA Glenn Carpenter Center is a non-denominational day camp accessible to all.

Position Overview

As part of the Glenn Carpenter Center staff, the Head Lifeguard and Day Camp Counsellor will supervise the waterfront and deliver quality programming for all participants. Successful candidates will collaborate with staff and volunteers to develop programs that promote physical, mental, and social health among children and youth, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment.

The camp is located on Foster Thurston, offering a wilderness setting with extensive facilities including forests, a lake, trails, an archery field, sports fields, and a beach. Camps include traditional and specialty options like babysitting, biking, and climbing.

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervise children and youth, providing leadership and ensuring safety.
  • Assist with staff scheduling and replacements.
  • Manage the Waterpark Resource binder, communication, and training.
  • Support lifeguard training and advanced aquatic courses.
  • Participate in staff orientation and ongoing training.
  • Perform scheduled guarding duties, enforce safety procedures, and respond to emergencies.
  • Maintain waterfront equipment and develop emergency procedures.
  • Act as a positive role model and maintain a safe environment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of facilities and equipment.
  • Communicate facility guidelines and act as a mentor to youth and families.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in program activities.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience in a day camp or youth program setting.
  • Previous lifeguarding experience.

  • Certification in NLS Waterfront or willingness to attain it; other camp certifications are assets.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
