Job summary

Interior Health seeks a permanent part-time Life Skills Worker I to support the Complex Care Housing sites in Kelowna, BC. The 0.72 FTE role involves assisting clients with daily living, life skill development, and coordination with the care team.

Position Summary

Interior Health is currently seeking a permanent part time (0.72 FTE) Life Skills Worker I to join our Mental Health Substance Use (MHSU) Complex Care Housing team at the Outreach Urban Health Centre in Kelowna, B.C.

What will you work on?

Complex Care Housing provides supportive housing for persons with mental health and substance use, with an emphasis on intensive clinical health supports available 24/7. This position will support the Complex Care Housing sites within the community.

Life Skills Workers play an important role in care. They plan, observe, monitor and report on clients’ progress and level of acceptance to services and support. They assist clients with activities associated with daily living and work to demonstrate and model appropriate behaviors related to problem solving and decision making.

Life Skills Workers provide structured support to help develop and maintain life skills related to:

• time management;


• money management, budgeting skills, how to access funds and other forms of available assistance;


• organization and interpersonal communication;


• personal care (e.g.: hygiene, routine);


• household management (e.g.: laundry, cleaning);


• menu planning, grocery shopping, meal preparation


• community access (e.g.: public transportation)

• Participates in care planning with clients and/or team professionals by performing duties such as reporting observations of client function, needs and progress as well as the individual/family preferences, level of acceptance/resistance to services or support.


• Monitors clients in accordance with established treatment objectives and/or care plans; observes client’s behaviours and/or provides verbal reports on changes in client’s appearance, behaviour, and/or health.


• Provides support to clients in the development and maintenance of life skills. Establishes rapport with clients based on respect and promotes clients to manage behaviours and self care. Demonstrates and models appropriate behaviours and provides support in problem solving and decision making.


• Teaches strategies to cope with stressful situations related to client activities of daily living and ensures clients have information necessary to access professional and community resources for personal support.


• Participates in, oversees, and assists in the development of various client-focused social and recreational activities.


• Facilitates clients’ physical, psychiatric, spiritual, recreational, leisure, income, and social needs by performing such duties as arranging for clients to be transported to programs/services, and assisting clients to attend appointments.


• Maintains an awareness of current community resources including health care services, social, economic, recreational, employment, educational services and resources, and other agencies. Utilizes the information to assist with client access and problem solving, as required.


• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Scheduling Information:

Shift types are rotating days and shift times are from 08:30 to 20:30 hours.

Qualfications

Education, Training and Experience:

• Grade 12


• Certificate in a field relevant to the position (i.e.: community social services, rehabilitation)


• One-year recent related experience working with individuals experiencing mental health and substance use problems; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


• Valid certificates in CPR, First Aid and Food Safe required.


• Valid BC Driver’s License (Class 5).
