Job summary

Alberta Health Services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient and family care on the Surgery Inpatient unit (Unit 32). You will join an interprofessional team caring for orthopedic and hip fracture patients and participate in quality improvement at the frontline.

Working days, nights and weekends, you will be expected to complete an accredited LPN program, hold or be eligible for CLHA registration,

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with CLHA.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Your Opportunity

ALicensed PracticalNurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. Staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital serves a unique inner city population and we want to do it well. The Surgery Inpatient program maintains the expectation that all employees do so with pride, compassion, and respect. PCU 32 is a 23-bed unit providing care to orthopedic and fractured hip patients. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. We have modified nursing care on all shifts with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and health care aides working cohesively within the collaborative model of care. LPNs work independently and under the direction of a Charge RN. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. LPNs are expected to direct and monitorthe care provided by health care aids.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications
  • This job is physically demanding, the incumbent will be required to assist with lifting, turning, and mobilizing patients as well as other physical tasks.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills required.
  • Demonstrated reliability required.
  • Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Candidates are required to write a medication calculation exam on interview. Failure to achieve a passing mark on the exam may impact decision to hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with assessment for signs of delirium and nursing interventions an asset
  • Experience with performing CAM assessment and CC behavioral charting/documentation an asset
  • Two years previous orthopedic and surgical experience preferred.
  • IV, PCA, Epidural, Drains and Wound Care experience preferred.
