Job summary

Alberta Health Services is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for the University of Alberta Hospital Emergency Department in Edmonton. This 0.68 FTE position supports 24/7 operations within a busy trauma centre, collaborating with an interprofessional team to deliver rapid assessment and care for emergency patients.

You will work across shifts (days, evenings, weekends), perform nursing processes, and adhere to standards of practice while focusing on patient and family-centred care.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited LPN education program.
  • Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit with CLPNA.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centred care in the Emergency Department.
  • Work with an interprofessional health care team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care.
  • Support 24/7 ED operations across Day/Evening/Weekend shifts.

The UAH and Stollery Children’s Emergency Department is a busy tertiary care level I emergency department and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This large tertiary Trauma Centre provides opportunities in a broad base of emergency nursing from Pediatrics to Trauma Care. Licensed Practical Nurses within the Emergency department work in a state of the art facility utilizing an electronic tracking system, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for emergency patients. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary health care team environment. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Medication Administration via a Central Line (CVC, PICC, or IVAD) module completed in CLPNA Restricted Activities & Advanced Authorizations. Current Basic Life Support (BLS - Heart and Stroke AED Level C REQUIRED) - Healthcare Provider Registration 2 years applicable med/surg experience may be considered. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment. Preference will be given to applicants with recent LPN experience in a tertiary care facility Emergency Department. Preference will also be given to those candidates who possess recent acute/critical care LPN experience in the last two years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year LPN emergency nursing experience. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational & patient care skills required. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Must be able to identify own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficits occur. Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the CLPNA and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment.
