Job summary

Alberta Health Services seeks an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse for a fast-paced Level I Emergency Department at the University of Alberta Hospital. You will assess, implement, and evaluate care with an interprofessional team, using an electronic patient tracking system.

This full-time role features night and weekend shifts, 11.08-hour shifts, and a supportive environment focused on patient- and family-centered care in a high-acuity setting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.
  • Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with CLHA/CLPNA.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • Medication Administration via Central Line module completed within CLPNA framework.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and patient care skills.
  • Ability to communicate clinical findings clearly and accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving abilities; seek guidance to close knowledge gaps.
  • On your feet for extended periods; assist in transporting, lifting and positioning patients; bend, lift, push and pull equipment.

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care using nursing processes.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team to support patient flow in ED.
  • Work in various areas of the Emergency Department as needed.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have completed the Medication Administration via Central Line module (CVC, PICC, or IVAD) within the CLPNA Restricted Activities and Advanced Authorizations framework. Demonstrated strong assessment, organizational, and patient care skills. The ability to communicate clinical findings clearly and accurately. Strong interpersonal and problem solving abilities, along with the capacity to identify their own learning needs and seek guidance in areas where additional knowledge or support is required. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have a minimum of one year of LPN experience in an Emergency Department, with additional preference given to those who have worked in a tertiary care setting or who have recent acute or critical care experience within the past two years. Candidates with at least two years of relevant medical surgical experience may also be considered.
