Job summary

Vancouver Public Library is seeking a Library Public Service Associate II for the Children’s Library to staff service desks, assist patrons, and support programs on-site. The role includes reader’s advisory, staff scheduling, and daily operations in a fast-paced, welcoming environment.

This regular full-time position requires Grade 12 (or equivalent) and considerable related experience, with strong customer service, communication, and tech skills, including library software and Excel.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by relevant courses and/or experience.

Responsibilities

  • Staff service desks, check in/out items, assist patrons at the Children’s Library.
  • Provide basic reader’s advisory by referring to VPL’s collection.
  • Schedule branch staff daily and track time worked for payroll accuracy.
  • Assist in supporting our creative programs for the public.
  • Sort and shelve books and resources; lift and move items as needed.

About the Job

Library Public Service Assistant IIs (“LPSA II”) staff VPL’s service desks, checking in and out items, assisting patrons in the use of VPL’s website and apps, and answering questions to help patrons in a friendly and welcoming way. They provide basic reader’s advisory by referring to VPL’s collection and assist patrons in the use of VPL’s computers and printers.

LPSA IIs provide direction and guidance to clerical staff, particularly in the absence of a direct supervisor. LPSAs also schedule branch staff on a daily basis, and track their time worked to ensure payroll accuracy.

The library welcomes people from all walks of life. We deliver friendly, respectful and responsive service for everyone, regardless of their income, housing situation, or background. A genuine desire to help people will be a great asset in this role!

Other duties will involve sorting and shelving books and other resources which requires the ability to lift and handle a high volume of physical items during a shift, and to stand, reach, bend, and move around the library comfortably for long periods of time. You will be part of a system that circulates over 5 million items per year!

LPSA IIs also assist in supporting our creative programs to the public.

Job Requirements:

Education/Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by relevant courses and/or experience.

Experience:

  • Considerable related experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of the objectives, organization, procedures, services and resources of the Library.
  • Ability to assess procedures, implement new or revised work methods and procedures, and to make decisions in light of established precedents
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize and carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Strong commitment to serving clients; open, pragmatic and responsive to clients and community.
  • Ability to provide direction and guidance to a clerical staff team; good team-building and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with integrated library software, and other software related to the work, such as Excel.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, applications & software, processes and skills.
  • Innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing library environment with the ability to assist staff to participate in and be open to change.

Employment Type: Regular Full-Time

Salary: $28.98 to $33.84 per hour

Work Schedule:

Monday: 12:00pm - 8:30pm
Tuesday: 8:30am - 5:00pm
Wednesday: 8:30am - 5:00pm
Thursday: 8:30am - 5:00pm
Friday: 8:30am - 5:00pm (EDO Week 1, OFF Week 4)
Sunday: 8:30am - 5:00pm (Week 4 only)
