Job summary

Stony Plain Public Library in Alberta is seeking a Library Assistant for a permanent part-time role at 21 hours per week. The position emphasizes excellent customer service, reference and readers’ advisory, and support for technology use and digital resources.

The Library Assistant is a community builder who helps run programs, ensures safety and cleanliness, shelves materials, and collaborates to advance SPPL’s mission and values while delivering programs for all ages.

Qualifications

  • An Information Management/Library Technology diploma or an undergraduate degree; other 2-year diplomas with coursework in education or community work may be considered.
  • A minimum of three year’s work experience in a library or customer service environment is required.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, web-based services, and other applications is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication with a strong professional attitude is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in helping patrons with related technologies, and ability to facilitate programs and events for all ages using new technologies is required.
  • Experience using Polaris or other ILS software is preferred.
  • Experience providing readers’ advisory and reference services is preferred.

Responsibilities

SPPL is located within a half hour drive from west Edmonton, along Highway 16A. Our library serves a growing community of 19,000 town residents, along with the residents of Spruce Grove and Parkland County. Stony Plain is a lively community, with many opportunities to enjoy the arts, culture and recreation, and the library is the anchor of our charming and busy downtown.

About the Position:

The Library Assistant provides excellent customer service by working with the residents of our community in a positive, effective, and helpful manner. They are the first point of contact in the library and provide reference services, informed referrals, readers’ advisor, and assist in using technology and digital resources. They are community builders who run programs, monitor the safety and security of the library, and provide expertise with special projects.

Employment Terms:

This is a permanent part-time position at 21 hours per week.

This position consists of varied schedules which include day, evening and weekend shifts.

Starting hourly rate is $24.31.

Sick leave.

Duties and responsibilities:

Provide excellent customer service to library patrons, including readers’ advisory and reference services.

Use the ILS to perform account and circulation functions.

Provide technology help.

Monitor the safety, security and cleanliness of the library space.

Shelve materials and maintain library space.

Deliver library programs.

Work with patrons and colleagues in a manner that supports the vision, mission and values of SPPL.

Special projects as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
  • An Information Management/Library Technology diploma or an undergraduate degree. Other relevant 2-year diplomas from accredited Universities or Colleges with significant coursework in education or community work may be considered.
