Qualifications

  • License to practice law in Ontario and membership in good standing.
  • 3-7 years of experience in construction litigation and corporate law.

Hybrid Job: This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement. Toronto Community Housing is looking for Legal Counsel-Litigation to join our Litigation Team within our Legal Services Division. In this role, you will provide strategic legal advice and opinions to internal business clients on a range of matters, deliver high quality representation in legal proceedings before a range of courts and tribunals, and develop staff training on legal issues for the Corporation in a manner that supports TCHC’s tenant focused culture.

What you will do

  • Provide advice and representation to TCHC in proceedings on a range of matters before courts, boards, and tribunals including but not limited to: Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal for Ontario, Supreme Court of Canada, and Small Claims Court.
  • Draft all pleadings as applicable, prepare witnesses, compile and review evidence, conduct research related to all matters that arise within any particular proceeding, and represent TCHC at all stages of proceeding.
  • Assist various internal clients and provide summary legal advice in various areas of law including, but not necessarily limited to, construction law and corporate/commercial law.
  • Research and provide legal opinions and advice to TCHC to proactively assist the corporation and to respond to specific client requirements.
  • Provide written and verbal reports to Executive Leadership Team, Senior Management, and/or Board of Directors as required.
  • Provide education, training and mentoring to TCHC staff on compliance with Construction Act and relevant policies.
  • Provide strategic legal advice in relation to corporate policies, directives, legislative developments, legislative compliance as policies are drafted.

What you will need

  • License to Practice law in Ontario (L1 license and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario).
  • Bachelor of Laws, Baccalaureate of Law, or Juris Doctor.
  • 3 - 7 years post-call construction litigation experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in corporate commercial litigation and construction act litigation.
  • Ability to research and provide advice on a wide variety of legal issues including social housing related issues, commercial litigation, insurance defence work, construction liens and construction litigation.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with, and engage, a variety of stakeholders including: staff, tenants, business partners, and community groups.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with computerized business applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software applications.
  • Motivated self-starter with capability to work productively under pressure and in a fast paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of Construction Act.
  • Familiarity with the following acts is an asset: Housing Services Act, the Ontario Business Corporations Act, the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and Residential Tenancies Act.
