About the Role:
As of part of the Ontario Postsecondary Access and Inclusion Program (OPAIP), and reporting to the Associate Director , Learning Services, the Learning Skills Specialist, Access & Inclusion supports the planning and delivery of academic programming and academic skills support for underrepresented students (including BIPOC, 2SLGBTQQIA+, mature students, students with disabilities, and first-generation students) at Brock University to enhance academic performance and success.
Academic support is provided through group instruction in small workshop and large class sessions, one-to-one individual instruction (on-campus and on-line), as well as through non-credit courses and other specialized programs. In addition, the Learning Skills Specialist, Access & Inclusion will support programming that supports pathways to Brock for underrepresented student groups. Learning Skills Specialist, Access & Inclusion will support equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization programming in Learning Services and the broader Brock University community .
T he Learning Skills Specialist, Access & Inclusion will:
Facilitate the development and delivery of Learning Services' academic support programming, including workshops, consultations , courses, and events ;
Apply recruitment and marketing strategies to increase programming uptake by targeted student groups;
Facilitate non-credit courses to support at-risk students, demonstrating classroom management strategies that foster a mutually respectful and supportive learning environment;
Establish a student- centered collaborative learning environment through dialogue and small group activities, communicating program expectations and demonstrating consistent adherence to program policies;
Prepare educational aids such as presentations, exercises, and handout materials;
Address individual student’s skills and academic concerns (both in person and electronically) as indicated by the student’s perceptions , suggestions from instructors/counsellors and personal observations, in areas including writing, study skills and academic integrity;
Meet individually with at-risk students to establish rapport and connect students with additional university resources, as needed;
Participate in team meetings to discuss programs, student needs, student staff requirements, etc.;
Work with the Associate Director of Learning Services to conduct ongoing research, planning, and consultation related to the enhancement of programming for students;
Act as a resource to connect students to resources, information, and meaningful experiences at Brock and in the community.
Key S kills and Experience :
A Bachelor degree in a related field such as Education;
Experience teaching and/or assisting post-secondary level students;
Worksop development, individual consultation, and drop-in teaching experience;
Experience working directly with students in equity deserving groups including (but not limited to) students who are Indigenous (First Nations, Metis and/or Inuit), Racialized/Visible Minority, 2SLGBTQQIA+, and/or with disabilities;
A strong awareness of current EDI trends and demonstrated understanding of systemic issues;
Strong knowledge of lecture, seminar, lab, reading and writing strategies, effective exam preparation and writing techniques, and the skills necessary to study effectively;
Familiarity with academic skill development resources and best practices;
Knowledge of academic integrity policies at the post-secondary level and understanding of underlying issues behind academic misconduct;
Knowledge of at-risk student population and the dynamic of working with at-risk students;
Proven project-management skills, adaptability, and flexibility, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and achieve objectives ;
Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality policies and other Brock policies and procedures;
Computer literacy (competency and adaptability using programs such as Microsoft Word , PowerPoint, Excel);
Excellent language and interpersonal skills for group, in-class, and individual work, and for communicating and consulting effectively with faculty and staff;
Ability to support diverse student populations and varying needs (i.e., respecting and understanding socio-cultural differences and lived experiences of students from equity deserving groups such as BIPOC, 2SLGBTQQIA+, students with physical, medical, sensory, mental health or learning disabilities, etc.) .
Preferred or Asset Skill s:
A Master’s degree in a related field;
Experience in social justice, equity/diversity/inclusion work.
Salary and Total Rewards:
Job Grade K , Salary Scale ( $ 61,286-$99,384 );
Target Hiring Range: $ 61,286-$ 65,000
T his is a 10-month fixed-term contract.
* The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
